Default Paralyzed And Alone.

I have a recurring nightmare that happens at random times. It always starts out as there is nothing around me and I am lying down. I try to get up and move but I am unable to. I try screaming for some one to come and help me but no one comes. During this dream I am aware that I am a sleep and I try to wake myself and when I do finally wake up my body is stiff and I am afraid to go back to sleep.
I have had this nightmare for along time now and i never now when it will pop back up.... because of the nightmare i am now afraid of being paralyzed and alone

Hi,
Welcome to the forum.
If you read througha lot of posts, you will find many dreams similar to yours. They are called "sleep paralysis" dreams, because your dream frightens you awake with the "idea" that you can't move or call for help. Have alook at this thread
It is not dangerous, as when you realise you're dreaming the movements and voice returns and you wake up! Turn over and go back to sleep!
The dreams happen when you sleep on your back and have difficulty breathing. The condition is worse if you are overweight.
Your "cat" dream on the other forum indicates that you have some breathing difficulties when you sleep on your back.
Cheers Wolfjk

I do not sleep on my back or stomach. I only sleep in the fetal position. I read in one of those post from the link that some people have a chemical that the brain makes that tells your body to be still but i know i move in my sleep because i have kicked my cousin out of bed. stole covers in may sleep and growled at the person trying to take them sleeped walked. and sat up in bed in my sleep pointin at things

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.

There are different stages in sleep. When you are in deep sleep, your dream can move you about and change your sleeping position many times a night whout you realising it. The sleep paralysis dreams happen when you get into a bad sleeping position and an ordinary dream can't move you. You need a strong frightener.

The idea comes from some misguided scientists who probably study people who are under anaesthetics. In a normal sleep you are never "parilised" and the dream can move youabout and wake you anytime.

Hi,
Cheer up! Your problem is almost solved by talking about it! Now you know that the dream is trying to help you! Next time you have the sleep paralysis dream, you will know that it is only trying to wake you up! The main aim of the dream is to connect up your brain. You can turn to your fetal sleeping position and go back to sleep!
However I'm sure you will have the dream less frequently from now on. The dreams may even cease.
Cheers Wolfjk

well I have a thought. Could this dream be caused by some unknown emotional problem I have? I was not the happiest person growing up. So I was wondering if it were possible. (I do not believe every dream is caused by sleep positions or physical problems) Your answer seem to focus on that.

Hi,
Dreams are responses to whatever is happening in your sleep. Your subconscious uses any past experiences you had to construct or create a dream to respond to a problem or a need.
One of the problems in sleep is that the general stream of thoughts does not stop when we go to sleep and any bad thoughts, thoughts of an argument, defeat or anger impact on the sleep.
From your posts I gather that thoughts of anger and frustration often invade your sleep, that is why you're restless and land out at people who sleep with you.
Think of your dreams as your guardian angel. dreams control your sleep. They keep you from waking if you're tired, but wake you up when it is necessary, even if they have to frighten you awake - like in sleep paralysis dreams. However the most important job dreams do is to wake you up every time you go to sleep. You may not be aware of it, but it is always a dream that wakes you from sleep. You remember only a fraction of your dreams, 99% of those you remember are the dreams that woke you up! There is a simple reason for that; it is dreams that put your brain into gear!
Cheers Wolfjk

So are you saying that Dreams are what get my brain thinking? Do you have any suggestions on how I can get better rest? I know for a fact that it takes me any where from and hour to four hours to get to sleep. I only get seven to three hours of sleep on school nights and during classes I yawn constantly and cannot think as well. On weekends I get 12 hours of sleep and sometimes more if some one does not come and wake me. Even though I get a lot of sleep I still feel tired... and the dreams I remember when I do remember them are bad dreams and nightmares, even when I've had and awesome day.

Hi,

If you think of dreaming as a computer programm created by your subconscious you will not be far from the thruth! You have to switch on the power, press the on and tell the computer what you want it to do. Your subconscious does that to get your brain going. Think of a person as an iceberg. Two thirds under water and never seen!

First you have to take a careful look at your life. At present you are over active in your waking time. You want to do too much and there is not enough time. You get over excited and over tired. Relax a bit before you go to bed. have only light meals, a couple of buiscuits or a slice of toast. Avoid fruitjuice or coke. sit and erelax for 5 minutes and try not to think of anything. When you go to bed, think of blue sky with just a few fleecy white clauds and nothing else.

That is a problem! Boredom and disinterest brings on sleep. When this happens, excuse yourself and have 5 minutes complete rest from thinking. Just emptying your head for that short time will make up for the loss of sleep.
Here ends lesson 9999!
Cheers Wolfjk
