Default Recurring Nightmare. Help?

Okay.
This isn't my dream, it's a friend of mine. I'm really quite puzzled on the meaning of it though, and I've promised to help get to the bottom of it.
The dream always starts the same, and it always ends the same.

Everything is red, and rather dark. My friend is somewhere she can't clearly identify, and she hear's a lady asking her to "Come here," the voice sounds familiar, it seems safe, and for some reason she trusts her. She gets closer and closer, she's see the outline of a woman, but it's always too dark to make out any further features of the woman. Finally, she gets close enough and the woman raises her hand which holds a knife, she brings in down in an attempt to stab her. She wakes up screaming, gasping for air.

She stops breathing when she has this dream, she wakes up because she
can't breathe. She knows when she's having this dream in her dream, but she can never not go to the woman, the woman always gets closer and closer, and I've been with her when she's had this dream. She talks in her sleep, she says "No" several times before she stops breathing, and then she wakes up in a panic. Screaming, gasping for air, and crying.
What does it mean?

Hi,
It means that she has a form of sleep apnoea. It is a common sleep complaint and there are some methods and gadgets to help her. It is more common in older people or people who are a bit over weight.
My guess is that she has this dream when she sleeps on her back, especially with her hands over her stomach or chest. If you are near her when she has this type of dream, you can stop or change the dream by moving her arms or turning her over by applying some pressure on one shoulder. You will see that as soon as you touch her the dream changes! So there is no meaning to the dream apart from gasping for air and breathing difficulties.
However this condition is not dangerour as the dream always wakes the sleeper if it is necessary.
Cheers Wolfjk

Normally that kind of dream is about cheating on yourself, and what i mean by that is that a person has done something against what they believe in, for whatever reason. It could be as simple as going out with another guy, or saying something about a good friend when she had decided not to ever do that. We all know that situations change, but the problem is that it happens because we actually tell ourselves how we are going to be, and our minds monitor that.

I know when i stop breathing when im dreaming, is to stop the distraction that movment has so i can target the exact images im dreaming about. Though people can stop breathing for other reasons, some only do it while dreaming.
