Default Burning Face, Decayed and Screaming

I found myself in a town where the ground was dirt or dust, the buildings were all wooden and together, and there was a walkway connecting them that was wooden as well. I’m not sure if this is how towns really used to be or just in movies, but in the dream I decided that it was like it was a ghost town as there was no one there and it looked pretty old…I was myself but also might’ve been a character in the dream, a female with clothing on from an earlier time period—I felt like I could’ve been a person from when the town was active but I was also very much myself. Confusing? Tell me about it. Like usual, something tipped me off that I was probably dreaming so I consciously decided that I would explore this place. I’m not sure what all I did in the dream, it isn’t so clear, but the part that was most vivid woke me up in terror.

I walked to one of the buildings that I recognized as some sort of a home and I, for some reason, knocked on the door. A woman who was very similar or maybe even the same person as I was supposed to be answered it. She had blondish hair that was pulled back in a French braid and light blue eyes. Suddenly and very vividly, she burst into flames and I got a an extremely discomforting close up of just her face which was now decayed and showed her mouth open very wide screeching (I actually “heard” the screeching). It scared me so bad that I woke up with the image and sounds still burning into my mind (pun intended), it felt part evil and part like this person needed help.

In dreams something strange happens when one realises that it is just a dream! The dream changes - sometimes imperceptibly, other times dramatically. The realisation changes the stream of subconscious thought in the brain. The sleepermay also change sleeping position.
If you are a lucid dreamer you may influence the direction of the dream for a short time. However the levels of consciousness are balanced on a knife edge and more often than not the sleeper goes back to sleep and dreams that he or she is lucid.

This part of the dream suggests that this dream was about what was happening in your sleep. My guess is that you were suffering from some physical illness - a cold, indigestion or high temperature, although a sudden twinge of pain could have caused the dream. Whatever it was, you needed to be woken very quickly.

Thanks again for posting on my dream. Your explanation of what might be ocurring when I recognize I am dreaming sounds pretty accurate when I think about how I feel I can control the direction of things at first but do often feel the dream spiral out of my hands. The idea of dreaming that one is lucidly dreaming is extremely interesting and I feel I can't fully grasp what that could mean in terms of how knowledge or new knowledge specifically about dreaming might affect one's dreams....
