i'm so confused and a little scared

I just woke up after one of the worst dreams/nightmares I've ever had. I was with my friend (both of us care deeply about animals) and some other people and for some reason we were hurting animals. The only ones I can remember clearly was a huge fish and a grey cat. The fish died and at the end, because of someone the wasn't my friend or me, so did the cat. I love cats so much and I woke up in tears not knowing why I would possibly think of this. If anyone feels that this means I'm not a horrible person as I am thinking please let me know asap so I can feel better about myself...

It's quite possible that you are worried about something and feel you are not doing enough to prevent it from happening. That would be why in the dream you are the perpetraitor of the bad actions. Most likely it is something important to you and that is why the animals because they are symbols of importance to you. Of course it could be much simplier than that. It could be literally your worry that not enough is being done to help animals, abandoned pets, poisoned enviroments and people are the root cause of the problem. One thing is certain, you feel you are in some way responsible for whatever is the root source of your worry. A positive note your dream did not have you actually kill the animals. You stated that was done by someone else. So all though you feel guilty for whatever this represents, you are on some level aware it may not be your fault. Also, the prescence of the friend may also indicate you are not alone in your mistake. That it may be a common one even your friend can fall into. It also may mean simply, your mind is telling you "You are not alone."

Many people have also posited the idea that ALL persons in your dream are aspects of you. I am NOT saying you are a horrible person--sometimes you just have to understand that the mind can and sometimes does mix real feelings with imagined ones.

Here are my thoughts: I want to say that the character of You was your Self. That character understands both good and evil. I agree that your friend is probably your guide, your support. Jung might say that your friend was your Animus/Anima, which is usually the opposite gender of your Self, but not always. The people hurting the animals are quite likely the Shadow.

Now, This is a Jungian analysis, because I think it MAY be helpful. It's not the only answer, but here's my two cents: Does your worry for animals and hatred of people hurting those animals stress you out during the day? I am also a deep animal lover, especially of cats, and I feel a lot of stress whenever I think about how they are hurt. I'm wondering if this dream is telling you that you need to guide yourself away from feeling that much stress, and understand, to some extent, that animal abuse does and will happen. I think you're mind is telling you that it gets too stressed out over this matter.

So it's not saying you're horrible. It's simply warning you about your peace of mind. Are you on a career track? If not, are you thinking about doing something with animals? That might be a constructive way to earn some peace of mind about this issue--through action, when you're ready.
