It feels like carpet....

Last month I woke up in the middle of the night because my dog was whining and she wanted to go out. I remember when I took her out I could see the moon shining over the see in a perfect reflection. (stuff like that happens where I live) When I went back to sleep, I dreamed about going down the stairs without the dog. I looked over the water and it looked the same, but the darkness was more penetrating, which is a sign it could turn into a nightmare. I woke myself up, but something still wasn't right. I realized I was in the place where the dog was. I felt like I was dreaming and I couldn't remember getting there, so I felt for the carpet. Unfortunately, the carpet felt like.. well.. carpet. A perfect imitation. I still figured out I was dreaming and was able to return to a normal harmless sleep state though. This is the 2nd time I've felt cold and texture so clearly in a dream. Anyone know what's causing it?
