Default Nicotine dream - 5/26

There is a quality in nicotine dreams that is quite perplexing. An implied intelligence which mysteriously creates surprising plot lines, complex character development, and intelligent dialogue, with a nod towards cyclicalism. For example I was able to determine why an initial condition of a dream existed only after the dream played out via a flashback. To compound this curiosity, I deduced this information not while in the dream but after, when I awoke. I'll explain.

The dream began with myself as a boy and three friends, all boys. The four of us were describing a movie that had just been released based on an exploit of ours. We were commenting that although I was not in the movie I was involved in the adventure. At this point in the dream the flashback began. We were explaining our endeavors to our listeners and the dream became that explanation. Things have become blurry in regards to the early dream sequences, as these things tend towards, but I can recall the latter parts wherein the curious circumstance lies.

In the dream each of used owned a flying apparatus. Fitted across the back, much like the classic jet pack, yet capable of only vertical lift, some minor directional steering, and descent. While in operation I had the feeling of being a languid flea, hopping about the world in long, drunken, arcs. In the dream we used the flying machines to explore a world of digital darkness. Floating on thermal currents released from massive computer processors down below we bobbed and veered from one adventure to the next, always curious and always flying.

The last tale we were a part of involved a member of my crew and a girl which he was enamored with. She was being held at his house, against her will, and we were determined to find her and release her from her imprisonment.

We entered the home through a window and began an aerial investigation of the rooms. Going from room to room we narrowed down the possibilities of where should could be and opened the door to a large open room with a depression in the floor.

(From this portion of the dream onwards I have clearer recall)

We noticed that like the last room this one had some sort of vibration to its form and we began an immediate investigation to its cause. An examination revealed a wall made of stacked mattresses. Two stacks of three mattresses on the bottom and six or more on their edge, making up the wall. We removed the two stacks of three on the bottom leaving the six others floating in the air. We did this under the assumption that they were increasing the vibration by rubbing against each other. We were correct and were rewarded with a lessening of the vibration and an unexpected plot development. The space, now open, revealed the hallway outside and the room beyond it. This room beyond the hallway had no exterior walls and we were able to see that it was made up of stacked mattresses. Stacked one atop the other the entire floor up to perhaps six feet were covered by mattresses. Here we were able to see that atop these mattresses were people sleeping. One of which was the object of our search and another was the boy who was keeping her captive. The rest of the mattresses were occupied by random boys and girls, nameless and of no meaning other than that they were there. We spent quite some time peering at them from this position and would have done so for longer if we had not woken them with some noise from our room. The boy stood up, nude and with what looked like a knife in his leg and began an argument with the girl. They quarreled in earnest and when the their anger led to a light being turned on we dismayed. Where once we were ensconced in darkness now we were alit. A shaft of light emblazoning the empty space below our floating mattresses, casting our shadows against the far wall of our room. I myself pressed my body against the side wall hoping to escape the seeking light while my friends climbed atop one another, each seeking to rise above the glare, none realizing that if one was seen then all were seen. The boy and girl had not noticed us and an attempt was made to silently replace the lower six mattresses. Our efforts drew the attention of the quarrelers and one of our crew, hoping to create a diversion and against our collective warnings, bolted from hiding and raced down the left hallway, nearly brushing against the nude teen. The remainder of us, recognizing the need for haste, raced towards the right hallway and into the darkened kitchen. Fumbling about the other two boys settled upon an inaccessible window above the sink to open while I decided upon the much more accessible sliding patio door. Easily opening the door I stepped out onto a rocky desert floor. Looking out I could see rolling sand mesas pockmarked by deep valleys. The clamoring voices inside the kitchen told me that my friends had been caught while attempting to free the window from it's moorings and I hastened my retreat. Unfortunately my flying machine responded like the sleepy flea it was known to and I gently rose instead of rocketing upward. While above I looked down at the commotion that now existed. People were spilling from the estate in mass, some looking up towards me and others scanning the sky for what I did not know. All were alarmed, excited and yelling but one in particular, and older woman, grabbed my attention as she was pleading with me for something. I hovered near her and she exclaimed in a hysterical fashion that here son was missing. Not only was her son the member of our crew that had sacrificed himself in order to afford us a chance to escape but she was the girl, now in mother aspect, that we were here to find. I told her that I would find her son and I set off to do so. In my attempt to locate him he found me. He was floating near me in fact, nude but for a loincloth and a bucket of Oreos which he was preparing to rain down up the people from the house. I convinced him to come with me I delivered him to his frantic mother who was involved in an unusual police ritual with the other two boys. A police officer had the boys in custody on one side of his police cruiser while the mother was on the other side. One by one they walked around the car while proclaiming their guilt. I was readying myself to do the same when the mother approached me and warmly embraced me telling me that there was no need for a guilty plea on my part. She was so thankful that I had recovered her son that she had overlooked my part in this affair. In fact she was so thankful that she introduced me to her daughter, a frail wispy blond with light freckles and stunning light blue eyes. The daughter took my hand, kissed me lightly and led me into a party where I met her entire extended family. The dream ended with me, years in the future, relating this story to an unseen audience, reflecting on the direction that my life had gone and explaining why I was not included in the movie. The film had been made by a third party who had read the police report and decided that there were only three boys involved in the drama. The mother had kept my name out of the papers in an effort to ease the married life of her daughter and new son-in-law.

It was this portion of the dream that confounds me. I have always been under the impression that dreams unravel, one moment following another. This theory lends to the surreal nature of dream, explaining the seemingly unconnected symbolism that permeates dreaming. Yet this dream seems to suggest that the entire dream existed as a whole prior to the actual dreaming or that the entire dream was dreamed at once, a sort of super symbol.
