Do people not dream?
If so, the people who dont dream ... is there something "mentally" unsound about them?

As far as i know everyone dreams, but they dont always remember them.
We only dream when we are in the REM or Deep stage of sleep, if we fail to enter that stage then we wouldn't dream maybe. But thats the only explanation for not dreaming. If we don't get enough sleep then we don't recall dreams. The only dreams most people remember are one that we eithier wake in the middle of or if we wake up just after the dream has finished. Thats all i know, sorry if im no help whatsoever |

As far as is generally known everyone dreams. I accept what is said in the above reply but have one reservation to do with REM dreams; although current research indicates that dreaming seems only to occur at the REM stage of sleep I think you will discover from your own experiences that it can and does occur at shallow levels, even when one is in what is sometimes referred to as a 'brown study' which is a shallow daytime nap. Dreaming appears to be an essential feature to good mental, emotional, and physical health.

In my view, being deprived of sleep can result in not being able to remember the dreams you´ve had. Also if you´re distressed and feel you can´t sleep properly because of this you may not be able to enter the REM dream, stage in which dreams occur (as far as I´m aware of), then you won´t be able able to dream either.
However, what I´ve also noticed from my own experience is that if you don´t have anything to worry about, say, if you feel peaceful when going to sleep, if you don´t have a need to start pondering through anything before falling asleep then you may not either have dreams or then they´re just insignificant enough for you to unconsciously ignore them.

Quote:
Dreaming is a necessary part of life. My experience is that dreaming controls the levels of consciousness in sleep. There must always be a dream going on in sleep, however we remember only a fraction of what we dream. Generally we remember parts of the dreams that are dreamt when the level of consciousness is near the waking point. People in good general health and few worries remember fewer dreams as ost remembered dreams are dreamt to solve some problem that occures in sleep. Although very few people would agree with me at present I'm sure dreaming does the actual waking. It is necessary to stop the level of consciousness from going too low in deep sleep, and it is vital in the waking process. Cheers Wolfjk

Yes dreaming is essential to good mental health. A town in the USA used to hold yearly competitions to stay awake. The winner would win a pick up truck. One guy went completly mad and went into a ginmart and then shot someone. The sleep deprivation did for him
Apparently though 1 percent of people do not dream at all... its not that they do not remember them ...its just that they do not dream at all. I think pwersonally during the night there are essential brian activities. Yet dreaming is perhaps not essential (as in REM). Yet sleep is. The brian activities that take place prior to dreaming are perhaps what is crucial iof you have sleep depirvation then you start to hallucinate. Surely this is a dream that breaks into real life. ------------------------ When you get a dream think carefully about which direction you are currently looking. Are you looking back towards yesterday and something that happened and how you reacted. Or are you looking forward to the day to come. If you are looking forward then its likely the dream is about some thoughts or fears about the day to come.
