Default question...

Does sleeping position have anything to do with having nightmares or certain kinds of dreams? I've noticed that I only have nightmares when sleeping on my back..which doesn't happen often...Just interested

Smile Question

As far as I know, sleeping position doesn't affect the nature of your dreams.
But see whether altering position, in your case, does change it!!

Hi,
Sleeping position as Jon said has no affaect butsome food and drinks have.
Dreams are symbolic and should be interpreted , some dream symbols are disgusting but mean good.
Waiting for your dreams.

I´m not sure whether sleeping position has got anything to do with your dreams as such, however, i think what´s surrounding you while you´re asleep is very likely to affect your dreaming. Say, if you have a pet, and he starts jumping on your bed when you´re sleeping you may either wake up or start having a dream about an earthquake, for instance. It happened to me once.

Also if someone casts a pillow on your face while you´re fast asleep you may start having a nightmare that your house´s in fire and you´re getting suffocated due to the smoke. Well these are only few examples that may affect the quality of sleep, however, talking about sleeping position, if you sleep on your stomach so that your head gets under the pillow and you find hard to breathe because of this you may also start having a nightmare of some sort. Thought I´d just post my own opinion on this. All the best

Rep, sleeping positions may invoke nightmares but alternatively nightmares do occur irrespective of one's resting position. I suspect that the connection between those types of dreams and the position you find yourself in upon awakening may be coincidental. It is not a feature that I have noticed.

Cool I'm with you Rep...

I don't have any background in dream interpretation, but 75% of the time I sleep on my right side, my dreams are more memorable and 50% of THOSE are nightmares. This has happened to me ever since I was in high school and that's 20 years ago.

I've had two nightmares the last two nights and I woke up and I was on my right... as soon as I switched, I slept the night fine.

go figure.

Hi,
I have been studying dreams for a long time and I can tell you that sleeping positions have a lot to do with how and what you dream.
If you sleep in the same position for a long time - even a comfortable position - the pressure on the same places become uncomfortable and painful.
Sleeping on your back becomes uncomfortable after a short time because of your internal organs, especially the lungs spreading out. The problem is more pronounced for over weight people. A simple experiment will show you how lying on your back effects your breathing.
Lying on your belly is even worse for causing nightmares. If a person has some pain - ucers or muscle pain on one side and sleeps on it it will soon cause a bad dream.
Dreams control the sleeper and if there is any pain or discomfort in a sleeping position there is a dream to move or wake the sleeper.
Cheers Wolfjk
