Every once in a while as I am falling asleep, when I am in that in-between zone right before unconsiousness, for a split second I realize that my thoughts have somehow morphed into human voices having an elaborate (and nonsensical) conversation. Its as if the many conflicting aspects of thought have become separate people, with different voices and personalities, blathering in a whirling "solid" sound - like how a tornado is a "soild" shape, yet not...this must make sense to SOME of you out there at least! I usually snap to consiousness right as I notice this, left with the feeling that if I had stayed in that zone, the voices would have morphed further into actual dream people and situations. It almost feels like catching your dream in its exact "conception" stage, before it becomes visual...

I have read a lot about the hypnagogic state but rarely experienced it. Can you enter that state consciously or does it just happen. Here is an article from my favorite dream teacher Robert Moss. He talks about this dream state as an entry into conscious dreaming.

I get images in the hypnagogic state, and individual voices and sometimes smells in the hypnopompic state. |

not clairaudient that I am aware of, and the reason I snap out of it is similar to the difficulty one has staying awake once lucid in a dream. The awareness itself seems to want to push you back to consiousness. I can't will myself to do it, and it doesn't happen often - just something I catch from time to time and find fascinating. I tend to interpret these things neurologically rather than supernaturally - to me it seems like your brain's way of easing you into a dream as seamlessly as possible, so as not to jolt you awake with sudden imagery. Your thoughts become dense and more of raw emotions - the emotion (since most are composed of ambivalent/opposing feelings) split into arguing "personalities" in conversation (the words nonsensical, its more the "feeling" expressed) and then these voices morph somehow into the sounds, characters, tones and visuals of a dream. Its like a roulette wheel - whatever emotion/personality type was most prominent at the actual dream threshold is what sets the tone for the dream. Just my theory!

I love that stage. I can see patterns, and weird faces. I wish I could dwell there for awhile, but I invariably awaken, or "go under." I have heard sounds, but they are rare. I love to "command" something, and actually see it. I wish the experience were more intense. My hypnopompic experiences usually center on words, sayings, or a visual word scrolling screen. I come up with nonsense words, and I hear effortless poetry lines, as well.

This happened to me the other year. I was eating at the same time watching TV. I was full up and felt very tired and felt asleep after eating. I had a very bad headache, so I just move my plate and put down my head on top of the table. Suddenly a woman's voice shouted "pregnant". I jumped with that shout that I thought it was from the TV but the voice was very familiar to me, it's my (dead) cousin's wife. I then remembered my previous 5 dreams about their family. My dead cousin appeared in dream and has something to tell but I woke when he was about to say. I also dream of the daughter that has a problem but I not sure what was it, then more dreams in a month. That angry shout "pregnant" confirmed me that the daughter is pregnant. I then phoned my cousin in the Philippines telling that her niece is pregnant and she asked me, how did I know. I told her about my dreams and the shout. She then discovered that her niece is pregnant. The boyfriend was about to leave her but my cousin sorted it out and her niece got married within few days. She was very thankful for saving her dignity. In my culture and tradition is a big disgrace in the family getting pregnant before marriage.
