Our dreaming minds are very into puns and wordplay. Look at the word "therapist." See it as two words: the rapist. Our dreaming minds see that sort of thing all the time, as it shows up in dreams regularly. My personal theory is that it is because dreams are primarily visual images, and it's often easier to show an image via a pun.
Eternal PUNishment.

Quote:
Do you all know the sewing machine needle was invented because of a dream? It showed Elias Howe a bunch of cannibals attacking him with spears that had holes in the tips, and he woke up realizing that for a sewing machine to work, the hole had to be in the tip of the needle, rather than at the top as with hand-sewing needles. From that dream, he successfully invented the first sewing machine, and now we're flooded with clothing as a result. Imagine the days when you had to make all your own and your family's by hand! There are many such examples out there! And that doesn't even touch on the interconnectedness we all have that shows up so often in dreams, both with the living and the so-called dead. Dreams are utterly amazing! Yes, lots of them are fun, but there's more! Once, when my oldest son was in Iraq during "Desert Storm", I was very worried about him, glued constantly to CNN, as if I could somehow control it by watching all the time. I dreamed one night of a man with a paper bag over his head who fell off a cliff. I woke up startled and started laughing when I realized it was a pun... Bagged Dad... or Baghdad... Falls. The realization came that the war was just about over, and indeed within two weeks, it was, and my son was on his way home to his wife. I stopped worryin after the dream, relaxed finally. That was a good thing! Dreams are amazing, but not just for amusement, by any means. Crystal, as a psychologist, you might enjoy the writing of Belleruth Naparstek, who is a Jungian and a psychic who uses her gifts in therapy. I love reading her!

idk...
I mean, I like puns and all, and sometimes I can find them randomly, but I don't think my brain works like yours does during the night. If it were all a pun, it'd be so much easier see, I'd think.

LOL... but it very often IS all a pun! For other people as well as me. I even get interlingual puns though, and I'm not sure that's so common, like seeing a fox, but for me it relates to the French word "faux" which looks in English as if it *should* be pronounced fox, and it means false... so when I see a fox in a dream, it might mean something is false. Convoluted, huh? I took a lot of foreign languages in high school... hated study halls. What I got from them is good at recognizing puns and other wordplay even beyond English. The weirdest things my whole life seem to have conspired to point me towards working with dreams. Odd, huh?
I'm not sure it's my brain coming up with the puns on my own anyway, though I do need to use it to unravel them. That's part of interpretation. I think my guides come up with them first! It keeps me laughing anyway. Once I got a flash of a woman wearing a fancy collar over her sweater, made of plaid fabric with lace trim. I suddenly realized I was being told that I was studying so much, I had become a Woman Scholar. (woman's collar... see? say it out loud... that's the best way to catch the puns) Goodnight now... I'll probably be back tomorrow! I must go now and repair a piece of jewelry, watch Charlie Gibson, etc. Dream well!

very insightful posts .......got me thinking.....i'm interested now in obtaining the book that was recently mentioned. i've never realized the whole pun-concept either until just now and i have been interested in dream analysis for more than half my life (i'm 27 now..)...there's just something about dreaming .....like a forbidden or higher education humans have been trying to get in touch with; and understanding that whole idea is what i'm forever intrigued with. I CAN'T STAY AWAY ...I CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF THE DEEPER MEANING OUR UNCONSCIOUS TRIES TO PORTRAY TO US ALL. !!

I had a dream I had an awesome dream; People in the park playing games in the dark; And what they played was a masquerade; And from behind of walls of doubt a voice was crying out

It's from "Say You, Say Me" by Lionel Ritchie; appeared in the White Nights movie.
