Hey Squirrel
Nice painting. Could you post the dream? I really like the idea of dream art, but personally I'm not really an artist so it's hard for me to draw/paint what I dream even if I really want to. Eventually though I would like to try and make some more and if I do I'll post them here. The idea is too good to let die. Keep posting! maybe new people will notice the thread and join in. - Manny |

My particular form of dream art is poetry! I hope that's okay... if not, I could start a separate thread. But I like this one! I am enjoying everyone's artwork, thank you! I like to include the original dream with my poems, as I think it's interesting to see the inspiration. I am trying to collect enough of these for a small book at some point, so would appreciate having the copyright respected... thank you!
BIRTH OF THE ARTIST {with nods to Julia Cameron and Peter, Paul & Mary} Being born free isn't easy, you know. It's rather like being swallowed by a boa constrictor. "Oh, no, oh, no, he swallowed my toe, he swallowed my toe, oh, gee, oh, gee, he's up to my knee, he's up to my knee..." Pulsing contractions move me along my path, only allow me glimpses of the greater Reality, of the life I could create would create if only... "Oh, fiddle, oh, fiddle, he's reached my middle, he's reached my middle..." But I'm surrounded by white, light, consciousness pulsing, images of rainbow color breathe, not outside those huge windows, with their skies of clear saturated blue, and not a drop of rain today, inside, in my high space, covering my walls in splendor! "oh, heck, oh, heck, he's up to my neck, he's up to my neck..." I'm getting dry here! I'm not all wet anymore, not a wet-behind-the-ears neophyte looking for a fight on every issue, every point of difference, just too, too tiresome. "oh, dread, oh, dread, he's reached my head, he's reached my head..." Maybe this is the true Artist's Way, this being swallowed whole, this endless contraction this big {{{squeeze}}} this push to get it OUT! "Gulp!" (c) February 29, 2008 The Inspiration: Dream: Man in a Dryer Tube, Being Birthed; February 28, 2008 I saw a man and he was caught inside what looked like my expandable dryer vent tube, like a white tube with accordion folds in it to make it pliable so you can stretch and bend it, only it was large enough to hold a grown man. He was in a loft area, and I thought he wanted to be an artist, and the loft was empty, but I had this image of it filled with colorful paintings, an image I knew was what he wanted. It was a beautiful loft with high arched multi-paned windows all along one wall, and full of wood, and with stainless steel in the kitchen area. As I watched, the man was moving through this tube, as if was contracting and pushing him along, almost like a Boa Constrictor might, but definitely plastic tubing. At one point, he was folded over, like doubled over in a fetal position, but still moving along. Once in awhile, he'd reach a place with a small window, and look out at his room, and I knew he was imagining filling it with art that he made himself. He couldn't get ahold of these window spaces though to break himself loose. He had to stay in this tube until he got to the end, and there were yards and yards of it coiled and looped on the floor. EOD The Boa Constrictor song, quoted herein, is on the Peter, Paul & Mommy album! All I borrowed from Julia was her title! |

I'm no artist either and I do know what you mean about it being difficult to put the images from dreams into picture, but I think it's more about the content than the technical points. Even children's drawings can have give you a strong feeling when you see them, depending on the things they have in mind when they do it. I think it's really interesting seeing the things stuck in the subconscious mind- simple complicated or whatever. We're all so different that everything seems new and alien and amazing. Iris Cool poem and dream. The site looks really interesting too. I don't have much time now, but I plan to check it out later on. - Manny Last edited by MannyAnalogue : 06-01-2009 at 03:04 PM. |

I was just thinking it would be a cool idea to try to draw some of my more vivid, memorable dreams, and had already started sketching one just days before seeing this thread. I started sketching another one afterwards, but it still takes me hours and hours to draw whole detailed scenes (both sketches still look like they were drawn by a child), so I figured why not "Photoshop" one (I actually use the free alternative: Gimp Image Editor It's at least as good as PS). Takes less time to Google images, zoom in, trace around, copy/paste, & match colors, so here's one I just finished, involving a few recurring themes that have appeared multiple times in a variety of ways. BTW, I never dreamed of a "Totoro" or a shark eating someone, just thought it fit the scene pretty well & went for it.

Manny, thank you! I hope you enjoy the IASD's art galleries.... they're great!
NfoJunkie, I love that artwork... I could maybe do that! I just don't draw or paint too well, not like the lovely things I'm seeing here. I love collage though, and that's a lot like collage... cool! Here's another of my dream poems: I'd Rather Be A Barefoot Girl Shoes of sand, or shoes of mud, or shoes of grass-stained green, I'd rather be a barefoot girl, than a well-shod Queen. I'd rather dance in meadows, trailing rainbows from my hands, Than ride proper in a carriage to many foreign lands. I'd rather skip in tattered skirts, hair flying loose and free, Than sit up like a Lady, with her biscuits at high tea. I'd rather roll down hills of flowers, smelling lilacs in the dew, Than have a pirate's treasure filled with gold of every hue. I'd rather skate and pirouette like the fastest figure skater, Than sit all still and quiet, watching like a mere spectator. I'd rather walk along the beach, find ten smooth shards of sea glass, Than worry if the things I do will seem too low- or high-class. Shoes of sand, or shoes of mud, or shoes of grass-stained green, I'd rather be a barefoot girl, than a well-shod Queen. (c) March, 2008 The inspirations: I had a hypnagogic dream of two practical brown lace-up shoes, something a librarian might wear, discarded on a grassy river bank, and heard a voice say, "We are only a distant memory." I had a dream years ago of being a young girl dancing in a wildflower meadow, and as she spun in circles, rainbows streamed from her fingertips, and I heard the word, "Heal." Notes: I actually did used to work for awhile as a library assistant, and I got to where I hated it! It was so tedious and repetitive, so I think that was the first dream's meaning... after I quit the job! The second dream was one of my all-time favorite dreams. It still replays in my head, years later. There was so much magic in that flow of rainbows, and it's like Reiki to me, and other touch healing, and like artists, with paint flowing, and like writers with ink flowing... all the colorful healing things the world has to offer! |

-----Learning how to use an image editing program like Photoshop or Gimp can be a bit confusing at first (because there's SO many options), but once you figure out how some of the basics tools work, you begin to discover how useful it is knowing how to edit pictures*. If I have a photo I like, but a self-conscious friend might not because it shows their acne or scars, I'll remove the blemishes before uploading the picture. If I find a funny picture that reminds me of someone I know, I'll put their face on the picture & use the picture to amuse my friends & co-workers). Even with drawings & faint pencil sketches, you can use an image editor to make the colors/details stand out more clearly & fix mistakes. *I'll gladly give you some tips and advice if you'd like. Send me an email or enable me to send you one in your Profile Options here -----It seems to me so far that drawing a dream helps me see my own dream more clearly (helps eliminate the timeline and remember more details), while finding pictures that grasp the basic look and feel of the characters/environments/items, and pasting them together might be another excellent method of showing my dreams to others. I've done enough rambling on, so here's what I've so far pencil-sketched of 2 specific dreams (one from early childhood, one from a few years back.. also at my childhood home). If I put more time/detail into either of them I'll try to remember to edit this post & update them w/ the change. For anyone interested in the specifics of these dreams, follow the link above the picture. I put the details of each in their "Description" on the website I uploaded them to (Photobucket), as an attempt to conserve a little space on this thread. Can't wait to see more from the rest of you. For all the dreamers on this site & what a great idea it is (for what it's worth, I also vote for making it a "sticky") I'm surprised there's not more of us posting our dream-inspired art. -~"Apocalypse Now!"~- ![]() -~"Poor Dog"~- ![]() Last edited by NfoJunkie : 06-06-2009 at 09:55 PM. |
