I'm a bit of a heavy metal fanatic
Thought I would share my love of heavy metal by letting you all know about a group i came across recently on itunes called Dream Theater. I highly recommend them. They are well accomplished at 10 albums 4 live albums 2 greatest hit albums and 1 EP on itunes alone. They are not only reminiscent of metal bands of the late 80's and early 90's they are from the early 90's If any of you like this music I can suggest other stuff I have bought that is similar if not better. Just thought I'd share my love of music with a band hope most of you come to appreciate if not fall in love with. Keeping the Dream alive -DT

At first I thought you were kidding, but as you are from Scotland and retired it amy be a cultural and generational thing you never experienced. Heavy metal is a type of music. It largely became popular shortly after the rock and roll genre had evolved. It generally is noted as sounding to older generations who are not used to it "like a cat having it's insides scraped out while still alive". While that is quite a graphic reference to it's sound bands that have perfected the art can incorporate techniques that make their sound quite melodic and harmonic. Dream Theater I believe is one such heavy metal band that people should at least give a chance to listen to to appreciate, even if only for a short while, what a heavy metal band is capable of. If you have the program itunes I suggest you attempt to listen to a couple of 30 second clips from one of their live albums. Perhaps you could broaden my musical tastes by suggesting something that you like to listen to. Oh and if you were just joking about your earlier comment, then har-D har har -Dt

DT, Glad to see that you took what was said in the right spirit. Yes, indeed, there is a generation gap; I'm still with the ballroom dancing era where the lyrics of the songs could be heard and the only politics involved was that of pious love (if you can believe this). I liked how you described today's music which is exactly how I feel about it. I did listen to the music of one group (can't recall which) and came away feeling depressed. The closer, I guess, I can get to modern music is my general liking for jazz and baroque.

As i have tried to accustom myself to various forms of Jazz sadly enough I cannot bring myself to do it for extended periods of time (ie. a couple of minutes) but I am curious about this baroque style of music you talk about is this a form of Jazz or is it it's own music style? I have only heard the term referring to an era or art piece but never music. I will have to look this up and let you know if I find it as excruciating as you find heavy metal
however with that said I will vote for Jazz music over Heavy metal for background music any day. Heavy metal is a much more intentional music and should be listened to with a similar intentionality and intensity to fully appreciate it whereas Jazz seems to me more of something you soak in. My soaking phase is over for now, I'm ready to saturate Good to chat hope to have more lengthy discussions with you in future maybe one day even about dreams -Dt
