Hi, I am familiar with sleep paralysis but I experienced something that felt different recently and wondered if anyone has experienced it or knows the physical reason why it happens.
I have been having a lot of nightmares lately and as I am just falling into the unconciousness first phase of sleep, I jerk awake as I feel something cold touching me. It is right in the very beginning, no dreaming or anything has had a chance to start yet. I also heard a shout in my ear on the 2nd attempt to sleep and then a ringing (like a cell phone) on another attempt. I felt freaked out but I am sure there is a reasonable explanation. Anyone?

Very weird and interesting. I don't think I've experienced it.
Maybe when you heard the cell phone and the scream, it could have been you,. you could have screamed and your cell phone might have rang. It could also be an echo of a jumbled dream. since your sleep was interrupted maybe you only experienced bits and peices of dreams that linger when you wake up so abruptly.

Relax! you're not alone! What you describe is a normal part of going to sleep for some of us. I experience similar things in the first few minutes to the first half hour after going to sleep. My experience is that these things happen after an exciting, exhausting, or tiring day. You go to bed overexcited or over tired and parts of the body and and other senses relax at different rate. This causes the jerks and noises one hears in the first few minutes of sleep. I dont find the jerks unpleasant. The noises, bangs and some one calling your name is more disturbing but it is just part of going to sleep. Cheers Wolfjk

Thanks both of you for the reply! I am glad that I am not alone and it is something that happens to all of us.

As you have discovered those experiences are common and I too have had many over the years. Let me give you an anecdotal tale of a happening which both my wife and I experienced around 7 years ago. We are dog lovers so cats are not part of the household yet one evening when both my wife and self had just got into bed but were awake with the room in darkness; quite distinctly the paws of a cat strode across the foot of the bedclothes. I recognised the phenomenon having had many similar encounters but my wife (second) and I had been together around 2 years and this was her first experience of such events. Quite suddenly she lept from the bed, switched on the room light and thoroughly searched the bedroom exclaiming excitedly that there was a cat in the room but, of course, there wasn't. I had to explain to her that it was a 'spirit' cat. Now she too is a believer (but not of religion). As you become more psychic those happenings will occur with increasing frequency. If you become afraid of them they are not likely to return.

The existence of a spiritual side to nature has no connection, whatsoever, to religion and this will obviously confuse those brought up under religious indoctrination and propaganda. One needs to disgard religious belief and to see the world and life for what it is and not as one has been made from infancy to believe.
The genesis of the term 'God' arises from Judaism from over 4000 years ago to describe the beliefs then held. Most of us will accept the existence of an intelligence behind nature but be careful how it is perceived; it is not a 'God' as its meaning is generally accepted today and man is no more made in God's image than the flea is his bed nor the earth worm in his garden nor the bacteria in the garden's compost heap. Yes, indeed, there is an unseen force to nature and there is a spiritual side but not as perceived by religious organisations. Those who choose to believe in the propaganda that says that some womaniser by the name of the Arch Angel Gabrial, inseminated a 'married' virgin by the name of Mary (to name but one occasion) then I have a beach house for sale in central Kansas if they are interested. Ironically, when Christianity severed its Jewish connections it chose the name Judas to represent the 'evil within' which is a highly politicised move which is what religion is about; it is the battle for the minds of people. It is imperative that we separate or abandon our religious beliefs when making observations of life or nature or when interpretting dreams, otherwise we are at risk of deluding ourselves. This is not the form to discuus this topic but there would appear to be a threshold guardian level at the spiritual side to life and each of us has individual connections. Those who inhabit this first level seem partially able to make connections with us and seem to make the attempt to help each of us individual but equally, it looks as if there are times when those spirits play games with us and hence those experiences of your. I have not known any of those communications to be other than benign. What has been said may sound controversial but try looking at those issues from today's wisdom rather than that of 2-4000 years BC. Remembering that this intelligence behind nature rolls on impotently, totally unaware of the disasters created in its wake. Nature is based solely on the survival of the fittest; there is no compassionate loving God; the evidence is blatant and transparent except to the indoctrinated, the charlatans, and the 'cons' all who use it to their personal gain.
