For the past 2 years I have had evens similar to this every single time I wake up. Except mine are a bit different. What happens is when I wake up, my eyes are wide open, I can clearly see, and hear noises. I can make facial expressions and talk just a little bit. I can not feel, control, or move any other part of my body. Next after about 5 minutes my body starts moving. I still have no control but can see, hear, and make facial expressions. After about 30 seconds of weird vibrations down my spine my body starts standing up. I still have no control but can see, hear, and make facial expressions. I' am on my two feet with hands at my side. I can not control my neck muscles and my head just falls until my chin hits my chest. I still have no control but can see, hear, and make facial expressions. My body starts walking usually to the kitchen but sometimes leads me to my backyard. When I get to the kitchen it brings me to the refrigerator, opens it, and usually gets out something to drink. I still have no control but can see, hear, and make facial expressions. My arm picks up the refreshment and smashes it into my head and I fall straight down like jello. This is when I gain control over the body, while I' am down on the ground with milk all over me. I have tried locking the frig. because once my body tried breaking glass over my head. However locking the fridge caused my body to seem to get angry. It started punching the frig and kicking leaving me with a broken thumb once. Does anyone have an answer?

Question Frozen in a Dream?

People who sleepwalk and talk in there sleep and stuff don't have enough of this chemical secretion. So basically, your waking up, but your brain kind of forgets to stop secreting this chemical.

Everyone with this weird problem has there own way of telling there brain to snap out of it. Mine is actually "wiggle your big toe". There is no treatment for this because there is such a minority of people with it, and its not really life threatning. Except maybe a housefire or somthing. Anyway, thats what it is. All you can do is find your own way of "snapping your brain out of it". I hope this helps.
I hope someone out there is an EXPERT!! Because this happens to you quite frequently, as it does to me, I wanted to ask you if the hallucinations or cause for the paralysis has "entered" into your dream state? This question is very hard to communicate for me and takes a little back-story:

I've read that there are two kinds of sleep paralysis, one which is more common and involves the feeling of the body unable to move and the other which involves "hallucinations," including a presence that "sits on your chest" or on the bed, voices, etc. When I first experienced sleep paralysis it included hallucinations (and has since) BUT I knew I was in my bed, in my room, and I was awaken by the covers moving slowly off of my body--it felt as if they were being pulled off and so it scared the #@$% out of me but, of course, I could not wake up to see what it was. When I was finally able to open my eyes, nothing was there and my covers were pulled all the way up to my chest (not down to my thighs as it felt). I also had this same experience, where I knew I was in my room and in my bed, but instead of moving my covers, the perceived presence wrapped its/his arms around me from behind and whispered in my ear. I woke up immediately from that.

As time has gone on, this experience has grown more complex. The next "phase," if you will, consisted of me actually sleeping, dreaming of something when I suddenly recognize this same presence, at which point I become cognizant of the fact that I am sleeping and then try to wake myself up--which, looking back on it now, happened relatively quickly (with some inability to move and teeth grinding in the attempt to call out for help etc, but eventually waking up from that single experience). Now, however, the experience has reached the point where I will be dreaming, suddenly recognize this presence, attempt to wake up, think I am awake by dreaming something that seems real (like being in my room or with friends or at work) when something tips me off and I realize this presence has merely taken the form of a co-worker or someone/thing familiar to keep me asleep and I start the process all over again, straining my body to move, attempting to call out for help, feeling pain in my side from intense pressure (from the presence) only to experience another "false awakening." Its gotten to where I will do things in my dream to see if I'm dreaming or not and when I realize I am still asleep, I feel more annoyance than fear (though fear is still there). It is like, "Son of a #@%$, here it goes again."

I guess what I am wondering is if you or anyone else experiences their hallucinations supposedly created from sleep paralysis in their dreams as well? AND When sleep paralysis is supposedly occurring, are we really AWAKE as we normally think of it? I know one person's thread on here said that she "got up to wash her face" but really was still lying on the couch "asleep."

What do you think?

Patiently Awaiting A (any) Reply,

FlyingMaster

P.S. To anyone who also suffers from experiences like these, here is a website for a study group devoted to researching sleep paralysis. There is also a survery for people to help in describing the experience: Sleep Paralysis Page

You have to ask yourself the question: how would I react if it happened in waking life?
Being paralised and unable to ward off any danger concentrates the mind wonderfully! In sleep a sleep paralysis dream happens when the sleeper hasto wake up quickly. This frightening dream happens more often if the sleeper had a bad day or is over tired or over stressed. In most of the sleep paralysis dreams the sleeper is lying on his or her back, or in a sleeping position where breathing becomes difficult after some time. The dream is simply frightening the sleeper awake by using elements that scare - inability to move and the feeling, or actually seeing a ghostly presence. The dream is no hallucination, it is a dream that does the job of waking up!
You can do a simple experiment by lying on your back with your hands crossed over your chest and see what happens. However I would not reccomend you go to sleep in this position as it is likely to end in a sleep paralysis dream. You can also observe a sleeper, sleeping on his or her back - especially with hands clapped over the chest start snorring, gasping for air, and generally sleeping uneasy.

Thanks for your reply! I notice that you incorporate the inability to move as part of the dream state, designed to scare an individual into waking, which seems to categorize the feeling of paralysis as a result of or being a dream. If this is the case, then does that mean that the people who are lying in bed devising ways to get their body to catch up with their consciousness (thinking 'wiggle your toes,' 'move your fingers,') are really just dreaming that they are lying in bed devising ways to get their bodies to catch up with their consciousness? Does that mean that the idea of sleep paralysis as a neurological-chemical occurrence has been incorporated into our dreams? And if our bodies want to wake so badly, why does it take various methods to try and wake? Or is this part of the dream as well?

Other studies explain that the inability to move stems from the chemicals that are still in a person's system from when the body is in "sleep mode," and that the "hallucinations" or "dreams" that seem to scare us so much come from the mind's attempt to make sense of the inability to move or breath very well (from a weird position as you wrote) etc...(something bad must be making this happen to me). This would mean that that the dreams or feelings of a presence or pressure come from the paralysis. Does this fit in with your theory?

It is a bit more complicated! If you can perceive dreams as a very sophisticated control system, the go - between the subconscious, or superconscious mind and the brain you get nearer to the truth.
The levels of consciousness are critical to life, both in waking and in sleep. In sleep dreams control the levels of consciousness. The brain has to be at a stage when it can conceive the idea that it can't move an eyelid or a finger. This in turn leads the brain to ask: why? In dreams you encounter numerous puzzles and strange ideas that motivate the brain into action. The main part of every dream is first to raise the level of consciousness to the level where the brain can comprehend a command to do this or that.
However if you want to go deeper into dreams, you can brake them down to quanta of energy that constantly have to nudge the level of consciousness higher. It is a life and death issue. Without the constant supply and input of quantum energy life as we know it would be impossible. Have a look at the Second Law of Thermo-Dynamics and Entropy.

Sometimes, I will be asleep, but sort of wake up. My body wants to stay asleep, but my brain wants me to wake up, so I kind of get stuck in this battle whether to wake up or stay asleep. During this battle, this extremely weird feeling occurs. Like, some crazy force. Usually, I think my eyes are slightly open when this happens because I can see my room and know what sleeping position I am in... usually on my side. But when I finally snap out of it and wake up to get out of that state of "force" I feel a little exhausted. It is such a scary feeling though.

Default I thought it was demons...

I've had the same experience most of you described... and my dreams before I couldn't wake were very demonic... In the dreams my voice was being taken away and I would dream that I had already woke up... then the nightmare would continue. This happened to me more than 3 years ago for a period of about 2 weeks... One time I went to sleep in my bed and woke up to what felt like someone straddling my back and choking me from behind. After I was finally able to wake myself completely I just burst into tears. Ever since that dream I had trouble sleeping at night and instead of sleeping in my bed I began to sleep in the living room, on the couch, with the television on. I would usually stay up all night and as soon as my mother woke up I felt it was safe for me to fall asleep. But, on one occasion my mother was walking around in the living room and I was sleeping on the couch having a terrible nightmare about the devil controlling my body and forcing people to kill themselves... there was blood surrounding my nephew (who was 2 at the time) and it was just a very disturbing and frightening dream. Well, I thought I woke up and tried to tell my mom about it but every time I tried to speak no words would come out... and my mom was basically ignoring me. As soon as I finally came to, I saw my mom standing exactly where she was in my dream I started bawling and asking her why she wouldn't listen to me. She was confused so I explained to her the dreams I had been having and she invited one of her good friends over... they both laid hands on me and prayed in Jesus' name that these forces leave my body at once and I really felt it happen. I got chills all over my body and ever since that day, I have never had that type of dream again. I believe it is a force of satan that has entered the body, and manifests itself in your dreams.
