Hi Jon,
Im glad I could help a little. I did want to add one thing on the color black in a dream. Since the boy was dressed all in black. The color Black for me has something to do with a "place of introspection" or what some call the "looks within place" which could mean you are watching what you are thinking and feeling within very carefully, and analyzing who you are.

I studied Art History at College - 19th and 20th Century painting, sculpture and architecture. Though my real area of interest is the Renaissance, especially in Italy.

Re the dream - the style of the painting [colours, technique, etc] suggested it was late 19th or early 20th Century. The landscape looked distinctly English. That is as much as I can tell you about its context.
