I have to agree with Wolfjk on this one. As a kid I wet the bed for years because my dreams were so vivid, and I really believed that I was sitting on a toilet. Now something in my subconscious kicks in and stops this (thank god). But I still do get the toilet dreams when I really need the loo in reality. I think my mind just throws together various scenarios that stops me, but you keep that awful feeling of wanting the toilet. The state of the toilet is irrelevant.
I think with interpretation of dreams you have to sort out which ones have a meaning and which ones are just your mind going through what you thought about during the day, and the input you’ve had from other places like the TV. Some dreams are meaningless and are just your thoughts just popping into your head, some are spiritual in nature and have a message for you, and lucid dreams are a gateway with immense potential. I agree with Wolfjk that the meaning is only relevant to you personally and only you can work out it’s significance. I think that the emotions you feel in whatever situation you are in, is what is important in interpreting the dream. |

I have recurrent dreams of bathrooms...
There is nothing dirty about the bathrooms, in fact they are usually very clean. The dreams all have a few things in common: 1. It is a public bathroom, (for instance, the airport, a department store, an amusement park, a rest area on the interstate.) 2. There is a huge line to one bathroom and I have to find an alternative bathroom, (one dream took me to the men's room instead of the women's, another took me to an employee's only bathroom, a couple of others took me to toilets that were located in laundry rooms and shower rooms.) 3. There is someone there chastising me in some way, (in the men's room, a man is angry that I am in there, in the employees only bathroom, a security guard acts like I am going to steal something, and in the shower room, a lady is angry because I walk in on her showering.) Anyone know what is going on inside my head? I would really like to know... |

Perhaps a bit of common sense will tell you that your dreams are trying to delay you using the toilet! In sleep the urge to use the toilet comes on like it does sometimes in wking life. In waking life you can delay going to the toilet straight away by will power, however in sleep you need these dreams to put you off from waking up suddenly and the dreams also put you off from peeing in the bed! The situation seems presents itself (in dreams) in this fashion when "things" or activities that are non essential in waking life, are getting in the way of much needed resolution of baggage amassed from the past. You are in need of getting rid of feelings and emotions that have increased over time. The reality of is all is that you are too busy to address that which needs, (pardon this pun), to come out!
And if the bathrooms are ever really disgustingly dirty, there is a possibility that perhaps you are over reacting AND OR you are postponing that which needs to be addressed in a more timely manner and it simply happens at inopportune times all at once!! sailrmc |

I have studied all the classical interpretations as well. My guess is that you will agree with Sailmarc whose interpretations are based on the Freud-Jung principles. Practical experience of dreams and dreaming paint a different picture and taking all scientific advances into consideration, most of the Freudian and all of the Jungian interpretations are pure fiction. here is Sailmarc's Jungian interpretation: Quote:

With all due respect (and I do respect your right to believe what you will, and to proclaim it from the highest mountain) Wolfjk, but whatever you say will not sway me. Whatever degree of ridicule that you place upon me has no impact. Sure, I believe that some of our dreams, occasionally have to do with bodily functions while in our sleep, but I have long ago learned that there is much more to it (so much more).
Someday I hope that you will experience the depth and wonderment that dreams have to offer. I will not boast about my educational level, or proclaim that I am correct all of the time. I will be the first to acknowledge that I am far from infallible, even if you claim to be... (it seems that someone always has to make this assertion of infallibility, someone always has it in their agenda to show everyone that they are correct all of the time, while the rest of the world is dead wrong). Apparently there are many of us that are in the dead wrong category (along with some of the great minds who have studied the mind). Still, none of these things will draw me in, or stir me up. I do have to say that there is not a Freudian bone in my body, and while I will agree that he was a pioneer, and an incredible mind, many of his early theories simply do not hold true, at least as often as he would have us believe. This forum is not for debate so I will not go on any further, other than to say... (and this is my own observation); I find it amusing when I see in print, your anti-Freudian sentiment. After all, I believe it was Freud that was one of the first to observe and proclaim the fact, that we often are most critical of (even to the point of detesting) those traits, that we ourselves possess. Insecurity was one of those traits that he discusses in great length. You might want to read a bit more Freud. Best Regards, Sailrmc |

Wow, first, very happy to know I'm not alone in my "weird bathroom dreams."
My dreams don't involve dirty bathrooms, but here's what always happens (and I swear I have this dream at least 1-2 times a month). I'm in a school, usually a public elementary school (with the one I went to as a kid or a different one) or else a college environment. I have to go to the bathroom and I find one- once I go in I see a very open environment, no stalls and everyone seems normal & comfortable with this. I feel embarassed and go to use one but find that it's either way too tiny, or has weird levers, sometimes a shower attachment, sometimes a weird vent, sometimes it's too flat and I feel like if I sit to pee I'll splash everywhere. I usually look around and try to sit to pee but end up just giving up. The other night I had a different variation- there was stalls. And I was so excited. BUt when I opened one stall, I discovered three or four toilets in there and they were all strange and not usable. So I tried a different stall, hurrying over with my pants around my ankles, and alas, also weird toilets. Now, when I wake up from these dreams, I don't have to go to the bathroom at all. I never had a problem wetting the bed as a child, nor do I now. There are nights when I wake up to pee, but that is never in line with these dreams. So I know for sure this is not some unconcious "need to pee" dream. It sort of haunts me. I should also note that I do have an awful lot of "being back in high school or elementary school" dreams. So not sure if this has to do with that, it feels like a different kind of stress. |

I've dreamed that I had to poop and I found a bathroom with several toilets, but I had to sit on the floor. Also, there were no walls and I could be seen by passing motorists on a nearby road which feels embarassing. Then all of these people began passing through the bathroom where I was, so I quickly jump up and cover myself because I'm unable to go.
The more dreams that I read, the more common themes that I see. Smitty |

We all have some individual habits and and characteristics, however we all have similar bodily functions. I often notice in waking life that the urge to pee comes on or broght on by feeling cold or running water, if there is a toilet handy, I use it, however if there is'nt one around, I hold it and the urge goes away for some time. Many other people feel the same. In sleep many dreams come and go without trace and the urge to use the toilet comes on as it does in waking life. That is when the dirty, unusable, or open plan toilets come into the dream! They are there to delay or dispell your urge. On waking you may not feel the urge to go but that was the cause of the dream. Regarding school days; very few people escaped them without being embarrassed or ashemed one time or another. The subconscious often uses the embarrassing occasions, or the allusions and perceptions of them to wake the sleeper. Cheers Wolfjk
