Default The muddy lake

Hey everyone!
This seemed like a real good forum with smart people, so I decided to try and post my latest dream here and hopefully someone here can make something out of it
Sorry how long it is, but I remember the details so clearly, so I thought it'd be better to be accurate in the description.

It was late and dark. I was with 5-6 other people in a big car. We were driving, very slowly, somewhere out in the country and I didn't see any lights from other towns or cars anywhere. It was roomy inside the car, and we were all sitting and chatting. There were three 'rows' of seats and the middle one was turned the other way so the passengers could face each other. I was sitting there, to the far left.

We were driving along the side of a mountain and there was a steep slope to our right that led to a large lake. The road was somewhat bumpy and generally in poor shape. Somehow we knew that we absolutely could not drive off it and land in the lake, for some reason that meant instant death.

But suddenly the edge of the road cracked and a big chunk of it came off and started sliding down. We panicked and screamed and started to slide down with it, pretty fast too, thinking death was immediate! There was a hill ahead on the road, and just as we're falling, I notice car lights coming down it, it was very close. I feel relief for a second, but notice we're still falling rapidly.

I open the window to my left in a hurry, at first trying to get through it, but it was too small. Instead I reach out with my hands and just as we were about to fall into the lake, I manage to grasp some grass/roots and the car's fall comes to an abrupt halt and is now hanging above the lake. (Obviously no one could do that in reality!) Unfortunately the right door opens because of the sudden stop and two kids fall right in the lake.

I feel my grasp is slipping and just as I'm letting go, the stranger in the car had apparently managed to drive and run to us, and he firmly grasped my hand and pulls me out. But then the car falls and the remaining kids fall into the lake, but are holding on the edge. We swiftly run to their aid and pull them up, but as I'm helping the last kid, he franticly pulls me down into the lake as well in all the panic.

I fall down and feel it's ice cold, realizing I can only stay for a few seconds if I'm supposed to live. The lake, which is milky-coloured, is very muddy and unclear. I could only see a short distance down into it before it became completely opaque. I'm started to lose feeling in my feet, but the kid who'd accidentally pulls me up, with the help of the stranger.

The stranger, who seems to be 10-15 years older than me (I'm 22) puts his arms around me to give me heat, but I was shivering and hyperventilating. We stand there for a little while and I already feel more safe and slowly start to heat up. I'm still having trouble breathing and I'm gasping for air. At that point I'm so afraid that my leg was in for too long and might've caught hypothermia and wonder if it needs to be amputated.

As we stand there, I noticing the northern lights are suddenly appearing all around us (they're pretty frequent where I live in reality). I notice that a portion of them have formed into big pictures, although pretty hazy, but I just stand and see those huge images forming in the sky. I remember one clearly, but that was a crocodile. It looked a bit scary with a big wide grin, but I didn't feel any fear, and just stood there in awe, still in the stranger's arms.

And, that's it! I woke up after that and still had a really bad feeling over the dream, I was still afraid.

I should add one thing--I do, in reality, have an odd phobia of stars and frequently have nightmares where the entire sky is covered with them and they all form huge pictures in the sky. Not unlike actual constellations, but like really, really detailed and sometimes moving. I've never once had them being formed from northern lights before, though, but I still find it so odd that I could stand there and not be afraid.

I suppose this whole thing has something to do with one big issue that's going on in my life now. I'm doing really badly at university and my parents recently found out, I might have to drop out. I just don't know what I really want to study, so I'm really confused right now and feeling pretty depressed over the whole thing.
