Hi there, I'm new
Last night I had a dream I was in Hawaii (I've never actually been) and while on some kind of lazy river of sorts some big burly, hairy guy starts beating me up. Relentlessly beating me, not only with his fists but throwing dense objects (like canned food or something) at me as well. I don't know him, nor do I know why I am in Hawaii in the first place. I slip under the water a few times but it is shallow so its not like Im outright drowning, just being beaten up. There is a woman there who looks on but says nothing. I manage to yell at him as I'm getting away that my family will come after him, that my dad will make sure he pays for what he did to me. After I get away, I make it back to wherever my parents are. Its odd that they are together because they are bitterly divorced, but here they are in some kind of warehouse and my dad starts beating me up now too! Same kind of assault as before. My mom just kind of looks on as well and they both tell me that I must have caused that other man trouble and that I was getting what I deserved. I remember feeling enormously betrayed. Thing is, my family is not a violent sort. And my dad and I get along much much better than my mom and I do, and we always have. He and I have never had any real problems, we're actually great friends and have been forever. I can't figure out why I had this awful dream, or why I had it in beautiful Hawaii. Anyone have any insights? Its really bothering me and any dream-dictionary entries on being beaten up are extremely minimalist. Thanks! |

Suzieblues,
Your dream shows that there is trouble in paradise! It purposely chose this metaphoric approach and goes even a step further by throwing canned food at you (food for thought). I know another play on words. We see this quite often in dream symbolism and again it is all intentional (courtesy of your subconscious mind). Now what is this all about you might ask?? The metaphor is what is called architecture to set the emotions or tell where this thought is coming from. It appears as if you have disappointed yourself. Let me explain. We each have a child, parent grand parent etc aspect within us. The parent aspect as all other inner aspects of self come in two genders. The fatherly aspect is the part within yourself that knows right from wrong, knows what you should or should not be doing, and stands ready to act (just as a stereotypical dad would if you had misbehaved or let them down). In some way you are letting yourself down (possibly the lazy river is the key here). This indicates that perhaps you are not doing the things that you should be doing, being lazy or not pushing yourself enough to ready yourself for your adult journey in life. If you are already an adult it still means the same thing. The fact is you are not holding up your end to become self sufficient, you may not be prepareing yourself for a future that will provide a means for security and happiness for you. There is an innuendo lurking in the whole meaning that says that you have been told about this situation before by your subconscious mind and have not responded positively, therefore it goes overboard to punish you (by subjecting you to something that you will remember). Perhaps someone in waking life has also kind of hurt your feelings through suggestions that you are not living up to your capabilities. Time to come clean (the meaning for taking this struggle in to the ocean). Time to look back and assess any shortcomings that you might have inflicted upon yourself. Time to get busy!! These are not my words, they are the emphatic words (that are being thrown your way via your dreams). Peace, and get ready for a new start! sailrmc sailrmc |

Holy Moly.
I hate to hear all that, but I know that you must be right as it fits so perfectly with what is going on with me right now. And how ironic and "straightforward" (and apparently a burly, hairy man) my subconscious mind is. Thanks for all the help |

HAWAII: lazy
GETTING WHAT YOU DESERVE: getting what you deserve Dreams tend to link to real life thoughts and feelings. You can weave together the symbolic meanings to form a deeper meaning... one that captures a key thought or feeling - often from the day before. So look at thoughts and feelings linking to this general theme eg Do you recognise that you have been a little lazier recently? Has someone just been talking about the need to work harder? Have you just been watching someone who you feel is lazy and therefor gets what they desrve. Look at these basic themes and see how they relate to reality right now. Quite often the dreams we have show that similar themes have been coming up in our thoughts. ------------------ There is evidence to show that dreams can talk in a way that our waking minds understand. It just chooses not too. People have reported dreams which have included the literal interpretation of the dream. In one dream the dreamer heard a voice which stated that the dream meant "he was going to take a relaxed attitude to some problem that could blow up at any time". The symbols where very much consistent with this message. Dreams use quotes and questions when they get the opportunity. So why does the dream mind not interpret itself properly all the time? Dreams seem to be more of an internal process. Short term memory banks are switched off during dreams. We are not meant to remember them so why bother translating them.
