Nice site. Hopefully I can get some help with this strange dream I just had. I am an insomniac and did not sleep well last night. I am off work today and after the kids left for school I hit the couch for a snooze when this dream grabbed me.
I am walking down the alley toward my Great-grandmother's house. She lived on an alley and it was common to go that way to get to her house. I am vaguely aware in my dream that she has been dead for over 20 years. It is winter and there is ice and snow. A man who is a stranger to me leaves my great-grandmother's neighbor's house and goes to his car. He appears to be in a hurry. Driving down the alley he fishtails on the ice and hits another parked car. He gets out to check the damage, slips on the ice and falls on his backside. His fall breaks the ice and he is now sitting in a very deep puddle. He is not in danger of drowning, but he could use some help. I try to move toward him but I am moving freakishly slowly. It seems I can barely make any progress at all toward him. I eventually arrive and help the man out of the puddle. He returns to his car and drives off.
I go to the backdoor of my Great-grandmother's house and knock. A house-wifish looking woman answers. I ask her if she knew my great-grandmother, but she did not. They have only moved into this house 6 years ago. I start explaining to this woman that I am sorry to have bothered her and that I don't know why I wanted to ask her that question. I feel very confused in my dream. I am still standing in the alley and the woman remains in her doorway. As we talk various members of her family come to the door to see who she is talking to. They look at me with as though I am both potentially dangerous and sympathetic. I ask them if they saw the man fall in the puddle. They did not. I start to tell them the entire story even though I know I am beginning to seem like a crazy man to them. I come to their back door asking if they know my great-grandmother because they live in her old house, then I tell them stories about a man falling on the ice.
Eventually I leave and go home. It is my childhood home. I am sitting on the sofa watching television. I can hear my mother having a conversation with other members of my family in another room, but I don't really know what they are saying. I just know they are there. Suddenly the coffee table animates and takes a very aggressive stance in front of me. It has grown to my height and is going to fight with me. I shake my head and wipe at my eyes in disbelief. I must be hallucinating this. The coffee table is still there and I will have to fight it. Knowing that I must be hallucinating and that the others will hear this ruckus and will come running in to see me fighting with a hallucination of a coffee table, I lunge at the coffee table to knock it on its back.
That is when I woke up.
