Attacked by alligators in the woods

So I woke up from this dream yesterday at 4am:

I'm walking into the woods, and the ground is covered with snow. Not fresh snow, but a few days, maybe a week old. I'm having a conversation with a man, but I don't know who. For some reason I think it was Frank Sinatra, but that's just a vague impression really. I think the other person was really just a voice in my head, but it had a real presence to it.

As I'm walking, I come across a dead dog half-buried in the snow. It's a little dog, maybe a chihuahua. Instead of walking around it, I take great care to step directly over it while I continue on my way.

Eventually I reach a river, and can't go any further. The river is running very fast and clear - not frozen at all. I stand in the snow for a moment and the conversation in my head becomes an argument - I distinctly remember the voice telling me to shut up.

Suddenly, the other presence is gone and I'm all alone. I notice a dark shape in the water on the far side of the river, and look at it a moment. I see that it is attached to an eye just sticking up over the surface. I realize that I'm looking at an alligator (or crocodile) just as I notice a much closer one just off the near shore.

As soon as I look at it, the alligator begins to leave the water and head straight for me. I remember clearly thinking that it wouldn't want to walk on the snow, so I retreated a few steps back where the snow was deeper. By the time I realize that I was horribly wrong, it's out of the water and coming at me fast. I just have time to turn and run before it's on me, I know it's got me, and then I wake up.

What's weird is that I spent a minute extending the dream after I'd woken up - I imagined that I had a knife and stabbed the gator in the head so I could escape. Only after I'd satisfied myself that I didn't really die in the dream could I go back to sleep.
