Default Lions

This is a dream my dad has all the time. He always dreams that lions are chasing him. He never gets to the point where they attackor eat him but they are always around. Any ideas?

Lion

Carl Jung said that all wild animals indicate latent affects (feelings and emotions that we do not readily deal with). They are also symbolic of dangers (hurtful and negative things) being "swallowed" by the unconscious. The lion is a symbol of social distinction and leadership. The interpretation depends on the circumstances and the interactions with the lion.

Psychological Meaning: Lions are usually a regal dream symbol of power and pride. In a woman’s dream, it may represent the male aspect of her psyche. A Freudian interpretation may consider lions to represent the powerful and admired aspect of the father. It may also symbolize your ‘animal’ nature or your aggressiveness and will to power.

Mystical Meaning: In the Tarot cards, the Lion is a symbol of strength that can be controlled by gentleness (symbolized by a woman dressed in white). Astrology tells us that Leos, the sign of the Lion, are gregarious and like to be the center of attention. Perhaps your dream is saying that you are displaying these egocentric qualities?

He could also be a fatherly and charismatic leader, like a patriarch and is projecting his regal qualities on the lions, who personified represent himself. They never catch up to him so he is able to resist his more animal instincts and act in a civilized manner. He secretly loves lions, and they are endangered species, so maybe he could help protect them from poachers.

To see a lion in your dream, symbolizes great strength, aggression and power. You will overcome your emotions and/or difficulties. As king of the jungle, the lion also represents royalty, leadership, pride and dominion. You have much influence over others. You may also need to exercise restraint in your own personal and social life.

To dream that you are attacked by a lion, indicates that you have many obstacles to overcome. You must resist the force that is driving you to self-destruction.

To dream that you are being chased, signifies that you are avoiding a situation that you do not think is conquerable. It is often a metaphor for some form of insecurity. In particular, to dream that you are chased by an animal, represents your own unexpressed and unacknowledged anger which is being projected onto that animal. Alternatively, you may be running away from a primal urge or fear.

Since there is not too much symbolism that I can pick out this is what I could find. Give this to your dad, he will be able to figure out what this means when he reads it.

Dreams have everything to do with the subconscious, so only the person who has the dream can know what the symbols meanings mean to them.

Hope that helps

Hi,
Perhaps your dad is afraid of lions! After all , they ate little Albert in Blackpool!
Seriously, the sleeper usually makes or simulates the moves the dream suggests. Your father probably needs to move his legs often in sleep. The subconscious mind has to construct a dream story to make the sleeper change sleeping positions. Most of the chase dreams are dreamt to move limbs and change position. You could see it for yourself if you watched your father sleep and dream.
Cheers Wolfjk

Well we all face danger. dreams use metaphors to show how we feel in a given situation. That situation will usually be something that is happening right now. Things that happeend yesterday are particularly important.

A lion in this sense is an easy metaphor. How would you feel if you were being chased by a lion? You would obviously want to get away from such an overwhelming threat.

Yet in life we see so many threats which seem so important in our minds. A lion is so dangerous. Yet a boss who is causing your father problems maybe just as powerful an enemy in your fathers eyes. He similarly would really like to get the heck away from both. So really your dream has an easy translation - it simply means something like "I really could not handle that situation yesetrday. I simply had to get away"
------------------------
There are no hard and fast rules to symbolism in dreams. Some dreams use symbols which are absolutely textbook. A bird may symbolise a bad omen. A tree may symbolise a family tree. Many simple symbolic meanings maybe totally correct. Yet do not expect symbolic meanings to repeat. If a soldier symbolises the need for discipline in one dream it may have a totally different meaning in another. Added to this symbols may have very personal meanings. Here you can use the method of free associations and try to see what links to any symbol in the dream. Simply think back to everything in your current mindset and see what connections you can make. Even simple connections can mean lots. Say if a set of traffic lights appear in your dream it may link to some incident that happened at a traffic lights the previous day. Always remember that your dream mind does not feel it necessary to translate its message to you. The need to understand the language of a dream is not strictly necessary to you. Its like a telephone. You can benefit from it without needing to know the way in which the microprocessor and communications work. But nevertheless we feel the need to study and understand dreams.
