The Dream

Last night I had a dream about being on a boat with my sister while she tried to commit suicide. It was a large boat, a modern ferry, and we were traveling on the sea. We were on the top deck together standing near the edge. There was no railing, but there was a ladder. She kept trying to jump overboard, with all her might. I was frightened out of my mind and was trying to save her. This struggle between us lasted for over an hour, me grabbing her to keep her alive and on board and she trying to leap off the ship to her death. It was agonizing, physically and especially emotionally. I cried and cried. I think, in the outcome of the dream, she successfully committed the act and I was left alone on the deck of the ferry. Finally, I woke up because I had been crying so hard and my pillow and face were wet from my tears.

-My sister and I take a ferry (like the one in the dream) to get to school everyday.

-My sister and I have a great relationship and I love her a lot - we're like best friends. We spend a lot of time together because we go to the same school and travel on the boat together.

-My sister is very bright and bubbly most of the time. She does not seem to get depressed often. She often claims she is not totally in touch with her emotions, not that she suppresses them, but rather, she just does not have certain emotions.

-I am feeling overwhelmed emotionally by school - SATs, huge papers/projects, AP tests, college essays, applying to college, sports, etc.

well I tend to interpret dreams in reverse. If you wake up in a particularly strong mood(good or bad) then that should come through in your dreams.

Here it clearly does. The desperate feelings in the dream clearly capture YOUR OWN mood.

It need not mean that you are feeling suicidal though. Suicide involves GIVING UP... we give up in life many times without actually commiting suicide.

Dreams just capture how you feel... these moods can come and go ... they are like the wind... the dreams we have may seem important but they like our moods are very temporary. Some few dreams may tell of premonitions and telepathy ... but more do not....They just say in this case ... I woke up feeling sad and depressed

Hi,
Perhaps you are under too much stress at school with your papers. The dream is trying to keep you asleep for as long as it can to give you a good nights sleep. Finally it wakes you with the emotion of feeling sorry for your sister.
Waking dreams often use strong emotions, so you wake up in the morning with your brain working overtime. The emotion you feel after waking also takes your mind of something else that might be worrying you.

I think that you were reflecting your fears of giving up and projecting that on your sister. I have had many dreams like that but never of me (myself) trying to commit suicide. Your sister is you trying to save yourself from something!
