a vivid dream about dying

This was one of those dreams that feels really important for some reason when you wake up. I spent the whole day thinking about it. Can anyone see any significance in anything that happens in it? I'll keep it brief, no worries.
I was something of a soldier, attacking an Iraqi prison camp with my family and some of my family friends. I stayed in the bathroom while they went to battle. They were all killed, except for my youngest sister and my mom. The three of us decided we had to go out and fight. It was suicide, but it was our obligation. I was of course very reluctant to do this, but I owed it for my cowardance. I decided to go out as soon as I wrote a letter to my oldest sister away in college. She likes creative writing, so I thought she would appreciate a first-hand account of what it feels like to know you are about to die. I told her that I wasn't afraid of dying, just afraid it would hurt. I felt like I was already dead, and that everything in my life that was left was an unchangeable path out the door and onto the fields to be shot. I wanted to tell her all about the serious side of me that she had never known, and about the problems with depression I'd had previously. I'm not sure why I thought of doing this, but I left it out after a second thought. I thought about the times I had contemplated dying before and felt that this time I was finally ready. I woke up before we went outside.
Well, I know that I have broken my promise of being brief, I'm sorry. I am a creative writer myself, so perhaps this was a kind of lucid dreaming about a dramatic situation? It felt so significant, and very real. I swear if I'm ever about to be killed it would feel this way. Is there any significance or symbolism in this kind of dream? I know most people won't have read this far, so thanks! If you could help that would be great.
