A hole in the sky...

I had this dream at the beginning of February when I was extracting myself from a really crappy "friendship" where I was allowing my personality to be manipulated without my really realizing it.

I was walking away from the building where in January I had in real life been taking an intensive poetry writing class. I've always thought it was kind of a creepy old building - in that early Victorian style that makes everything look elongated. I was walking through the large green in front of the building, and everything was covered in snow, like it was at the time I took the class, and it was dark outside, in kind of a strange twilight. I looked up at the sky, and it was completely covered in really low, thick, dark clouds that looked very solid and wooly, they fely very oppressive. But in the middle of the sky, an enormous cube of cloud had been cut out and the sun was showing through. But it wasn't the normal sun, it was red, like one of those dying red giant stars, and the light it gave off looked really eerie.

Then I got to the end of the sidewalk on the green, where it meets the road, and I knelt down and started washing an article of my clothing off in the snow. I kept going back to the building to get articles of clothing that I realized I had left inside there, and I was bringing them out, one by one, in seemingly endless stream, and washing them in the snow, obsessively scrubbing them. I felt very frustrated, on the point of crying, but I kept washing the clothes and going back for more anyway because I felt compelled to do so. I woke up feeling anxious and a little dazed. The image of the hole cut out of the sky really disturbed me, and it stuck with me for weeks - I still remember it really clearly.

can anyone help me out, particularly with the sun image?- that's what's really puzzling me the most.

I think I get the part about the washing - that's me being neddlessly critical of my own role in the foundering of the realtionship. It seems like the clouds were part of my ominous mood, but I'm still confused about the sun - I mean, it's not a normal sun and I don't think it has the same ideas behind it. I didn't feel comforted or relieved by the sun's appearance. I was simulataeously awed by and exceptionally frightened by it. It seemed almost like an image of Armageddon or something, but everything was completely still.
I'm still really stumped by it. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm sure it's something obvious that I just can't see myself.

P.S. one of my associations with it is a Superman cartoon from the late '90s that centered around the fact that Superman's planet died and he was sent to Earth because it had a dying red sun. Maybe that helps?
