My fiance has been having a recurring dream for about a year now. When he first had it he said it his arms felt tingly and he couldnt break free of it and he started walking to the doorway. and when he woke up he felt like he hit the bed (i wouldnt know cause i wasnt there that time) Then he had it again when he fell asleep in a different room but that time he said he broke free from the tinglying feeling. Now he keeps having it at random times in his dream and every time he has it he says he breaks free from the tingling feeling. Somethings he says that happens in the dream, There is a high pitch ringing sound, his heart is racing, and alot of the times things happen in slow motion. Anyone got any idea's on why this keeps happening?

From personal experience I would say that your fiance is suffering from carpal tunnel. It is a condition where the nerves get obstructed by hard use of the fingers and wrist. In sleep the nerves get inflamed and cause severe pain. The dreams are the reply to the pain. They try to distract the sleepers attention from it for as long as possible but eventually have to wake the sleeper. Cheers Wolfjk

Hello Tiger_lilly,
Dreams can be influenced by things that happen in and around the dreamer while he sleeps. In this case your fiance is experiencing what is termed sleep paralysis, a physical condition that exists when the mind is awakened during deep sleep yet the switches (if you will) in the mind have not yet been reset to allow for ease of movement, speech, etc. Often when this occurs the adrenal glands have secreted large doses of chemicals into the system to allow the body to react to emergencies (adrenalin). Coupled with the paralysis, it is like flooring and Indy car with the brakes on. If you Google the term " sleep paralysis" you will find much written about it. As well, it is likely that his arms were asleep from physical positioning while sleeping. The slow motion, that he describes is in reality a wonderful gift of the mind that is automatically achieved in emergency situations... It is an emergency response that allows for rapid analysis to take place in order to maximize a safe and effective stimulus response to danger. So you see, there is much happening at the same time. Most of the time these mind/ body responses are highly effective however when one is in a deep sleep and these sequences are triggered some interesting things happen. When one experiences sleep paralysis it is highly memorable to say the least. sailrmc |
