disturbing dream with dying dog

I'm obviously at a crossroads in my life right now and having plenty of nightmares- although I couldn't define this dream as such... I was standing in front of my old apartment, watching a dying dog suffering, panting, lying on its side. A much larger canine (a lactating bitch) rushes out of a thicket to cover him up. As she gets up to leave, the dog is covered in blood, gelatinous substances and what appears to be the bitch's udder. He's wrapped up in it like a blanket. Still, I know there's no hope of recovery. A terrible sense of sadness overcomes me.
