Default This is one of guilt, fear, and death...

When I wake into my dream I’m sitting out front of my house. It is nighttime and the street lamps are not as bright as usual. The air is cold and there is a wind that pulls little bumps from my pores and I’m shivering angrily. My parents are out of town. I’ve lost my keys. I’m stranded outside of my home on a bench before the family vehicles. It’s late into the night and if I could contact my grandmother she would possibly use her key copy to open the house for me, but I am without a phone. So I sit, and I tremble, and I wait.

A white van pulls into my short driveway to turn around, but it does so backwards. It continues into my driveway without caution it seems and rams into both vehicles. I am shocked, speechless, and immobile. The van continues to pulverize my parents’ car and truck without damaging the van in anyway. Once the white van finds its length in my short driveway it pulls away into the opposite direction from where it came.

I am nothing but confused.

Two houses down a friend pulls into his driveway. Sometimes after school when I’m in need of a phone he lets me use his. I walk through my next door neighbor’s lawn and ask my friend if I could use his phone. The first number I call is the police. They don’t ask what the matter was, just the address. I tell them and hang up. I forget completely about calling my grandmother.

I take a few steps towards my house and the silver Oldsmobile Alero that is my mothers’ pulls from my driveway and speeds off down the road. Someone had just stolen her car and I got a glimpse of the Latino man who was responsible for the theft. The police car pulls up to me and I’m frantic in stutters. I tell him to catch that man in the damaged silver car that he stole it and it is my mothers’. The police officer drives off in the other direction. I walk further towards my house and my girlfriend is hiding beside the red Ford Ranger that is my father’s. I go to her and kneel beside her. She tells me that there is a car on the other side of the truck full of Latino men and that their truck is open and full of tools. I crouch walk to the back of their car and find a crow bar. I decide that this will be the weapon that I take them all down with. For some stupid reason, I slam the trunk closed. I’ve lost the surprise and their furious waving pistols as they exit. The crow bar drops and I take my girlfriend’s hand. We’re running quickly across the field before my house and the gunshots sound like deafening firecrackers. The zings of the bullets become way too close and I have to let go of her hand to maneuver my way into an alley next to a house beside the field. I shout to her not to run in a straight line. I make it to the alley after dodging six shooters’ aim and she is not with me. I continue to run.

After reaching the alley the dream scene changes and I’m in a dark house. There are many others present, most of which I know. There is a street lamp outside of one of the windows that gives a bit of light for us to see each other. I’m sitting on a barstool at a bar next to an old friend named Marty. We are talking about my plans for the weekend now that my parents are out of town. I tell him that I don’t have much planned except for being with Haley a little while later that night. The conversation continues and I notice that there about ten other guys in this living room/kitchen. They are all in the dark and all having conversations about nothing in particular. I see my friend Max and he’s sitting alone against the wall next to the entrance. He stares. Marty is still speaking but abruptly discontinues as he stands. His eyes are open but they don’t appear to be fixed on any certain thing. They are just wide open. I look around and everyone around me except Max is in the same trance. The front door is opened by a guy that I either cannot remember or never knew to begin with and two others follow him out. Marty turns towards the door and exits, everyone except Max and I follow.

The door sways open and I look outside to try and understand. There is a beam of light, a real concentrated one, enveloping the first three to leave the house. Above the light I see a flying saucer. It is close and I can make out the symmetrical detail. I become very frightened as a spotlight from the craft scans the many boys standing out in the front yard. I become even more frightened as the light finds my eyes. I slam the door shut and put my back against the wall. I’m breathing heavily and sweating.

Minutes go by and the boys finally walk in. Marty is no longer entranced and he sits at the bar. He looks over to me and asks what we were talking about. The first three that left the house did not come back in.

I look over at Max and ask “Why not me? Why didn’t they take me?”

He still stares and begins to speak irregularly with his tongue hanging half in and out of his mouth. He says “They said to me that it was a distance from Here to There. I wanted to escape somehow but it was strong. Later I walked here from the house to there at the end of the road,” he looks up at me. “So it couldn’t be very far.”

He seems to have changed and is acting very strange. The people around me appear casual about the experience. Like they were waiting for it. I reach for my house keys and they're lost. Damnit. I was supposed to meet my girlfriend at my house in a small while. I walk home and the doors and windows are all locked. I'm stranded out on a bench. The night is dark and cold. A white van pulls into my driveway.

This is when I wake.
