Question Reoccuring night-terror as child

Ok....lets see what everyone says.

I had a Psych teacher analyze this one, but I am not sure if I agree.

I had a reoccuring night-terror as a child.

I was extremely scared and in a hurry. There would be darkness and woods behind me. In front of me was a rickity dark wooden bridge. Beyond the bridge was beautiful and light- trees and a road.

Under the bridge....couldn't really see. Not sure if anything but dark bottomless pit. I would be crossing (not walking- but felt like spirit floating) across the bridge being very careful. Eventhough I was floating I was somehow causing pressure to the wooden planks below. It would be creepy-windy and the ropes on the side were frayed. I would see bits of rocks and wood fall below me.

Everytime I had this dream (except once) I would make it to the middle of the bridge (behind me the bridge fell apart) and below me the wooden planks would give out and my spirit would plummet. Then I would wake up in a cold sweat scared out of my mind.

Ahead of me the light was peaceful, but behind me the darkness was extremely unknown and scary!

1 time I made it all the way across and woke up. But since then I have had the terror and the middle of the bridge dropped out.

Granted I haven't had this dream in about 8 years....I just want to know everyone's opinion b/c I have always been curious.

Hi,
How old are you now?Female or male?
If an immatured child dreamt, If is female the dream is about her mother at that time.
A bridge means someone who is useful foreveryone. But passing a bridge means achieving a wish, that your mom achieved once her wish.
Ropes are promises one has.
Passing over from dark to light means achieving a wish and from mislead to guidance.

Your dream indicates that you were, at the time of the dream (afraid of transition and the pitfalls (risks) that you had to face before you could succeed at what ever you had your sites set on at the time. Apparently you had made up your mind to go forward regardless of the cost, and even though you were afraid in some way (about progressing in life) you were in a situation where you felt there was no turning back (either a conscious decision or an impossibility). In your dream I find it quite interesting that it was dark behind you and you and it was unknown? More like a theme, showing an internal drive based on fear of failure. Your mind was letting you know that turning back was not an option. It showed your innate ability to keep on, keeping on, knowing that you were you were going was better than where you came from.

I see very similar dreams when someone faces transition or change in life and they simply do not have a choice of turning back...
The wooden planks on the bridge represent life's struggles as we go forward one step at a time. As we do so, we are encouraged by better times, and eventually easier path, and brighter days, although the path to success carries a high price.
I have also seen this dream in those who are very seriously ill (although the color white is almost overbearing (in an overtly threatening way). Still the same theme... even though some of them were ill with a fatal disease...they faced their transition to ultimately enjoy spiritual transition to eternal happiness.
Because I have no idea what your situation was at the time (apparently not a fatal one) it would be difficult to precisely pinpoint the exact event that your subconscious mind was commenting on.
I am interested as to what your psychology prof. came up with.

well I would say its a pretty straightforward dream. The other side is some destinatiuon in life that you realise will make your life so much better. The bridge represents your own difficulty in getting dreams tend to link especially to the day before as we think over the events of the previous day. They could also link to problems looming in your mind in the day to come ..or near future.

I like to sum up a dream in a quote which captures our eotions. Your dream could mean this.

"I know I have to do this. I really have to make this crucial decision. But I just cannot seem to raise the issue with him/her/them. Once I have done that things will be a whole lot better "

So really the bridge and symbols symbolise real life conceptual thoughhts. Only you can see how they applied at the time. Its probably way to late to see how each dream linked to something in particular from thne previous day.

-----------------------------

The father of modern dream interpretation is not Freud or Jung but rather Jon Winson. But he never made a single dream interpretation. Instead he conducted research into the mind and established that certain brainwaves (theta waves) only appear during the night time. During the day we store up all new experiences and feelings in short term memory. Then at night we start to work through what happened the previous day and we integrate these into long term memory blocks. Then finally we clear short term memory blocks ready to start the process again the next day. Its likely that any dreams we have are linked to these brain functions. The weird images and feelings once deciphered capture our own feelings and new insights into the world around us. So the dreams then will often link to specific events from the day before and to new ways in which our world has been reshaped. It may simply link to our paranoias and fantasies. If we are focused on something about to happen in the near future then the dreams may link to that. Each dream captures one specific feeling or thought process.
