Default I'm dying to know what this means...interpret please!

This is by far one of the most interesting dreams I have ever had, and I'd love to know the meaning behind it. Here it goes...

The dream began with me in some sort of clear substance. It looked like air at first, but when i started walking through it, I could tell it was water so i began swimming through it. Knowing i'd need to go up for a breath, i started swimming upward, and as i did so, i enhaled deeply. I paused for a moment, in disbelief that i enhaled in water and nothing happened to me. At that moment i began floating up until i was out of the water.
When i was out of this water, there was a sandy beach beneath me, but no source of the water i just got out of--and i was still floating up. I tried to enhale again, but this time i couldn't (even though i was out of the water). I started rising faster into the air, and i tried to scream out to the people below but couldn't. My sister-in-law cupped her hand over her mouth and pointed up at me in awe. I continued to shoot up into the sky. Now i finally came to a rest, levitating in the air, and the setting had changed to a night sky...almost like i was in outer space. There were stars all around me in a purple and orange sky.
It was then i realized i was dreaming, and i've always wanted to fly in a dream, so i tried to do so. I moved about an inch or so and started plummetting, swirling downward out of my night sky and back to the beach i was above earlier. I woke up before i hit the ground.

If anyone could help me out, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
If you watch people sleep, especially people sleeping sitting up, sleeping on their back or sleeping in bad sleeping positions, you may notice that every so often the breathing stops, they gasp for air and start breathing again.
My guess is that your dream happened in the few second that you stopped breathing. Is it likely that you had this dream during a nap?
Cheers Wolfjk

no, it happened while i was sleeping for the night. I've had other dreams where i've gasped for air...
i'm mainly interested in there being some sort of interpretation. After having this dream, i felt a sort of peace take over me. It was a wonderful feeling.

Have you had lucid dreams before? Strangely, I had a dream similar to yours some time ago. I'm sure you'll be flying in your dreams soon! You can already breathe underwater and levitate, right? You mentioned your sister-in-law looking up at you in "awe". Awe is different than fear or terror - it's a positive reaction, usually. Perhaps the feeling of not breathing air was your own sense of awe at your dream actions? Next time, let yourself fall without waking. You will probably fly or levitate before landing....when you're aware you're dreaming, you can do ANYTHING! Have faith

his is by far one of the most interesting dreams I have ever had, and I'd love to know the meaning behind it. Here it goes...

The dream began with me in some sort of clear substance. It looked like air at first, but when i started walking through it, I could tell it was water so i began swimming through it. This is really a fairly common dream theme, but each and every one has it's special aspects. This aspect of your dream is symbolic of your mind in the "sub" conscious mode, and there are some things that your subconscious mind (same as dreaming mind), is going to bring to the forefront. Knowing i'd need to go up for a breath, i started swimming upward, and as i did so, i enhaled deeply. Logic on your part shows a semi lucid dream stateI paused for a moment, in disbelief that i enhaled in water and nothing happened to me.Now you are aware of the fact that you are dreaming, while you are dreaming (also attributed to lucid mode dreaming) At that moment i began floating up until i was out of the water. Now that you are aware of "where you are...that being a dream within a dream" the symbolism takes you to an awareness that will show what message or idea will "wash up" on the beach for your close inspection. This is representative of the so called hand off of a subconscious message so that the conscious mind (waking mind) can retrieve it...bring it to consciousness. Since the conscious mind and the subconscious mind are completely autonomous of each other this is a really interesting concept where the subconscious mind can (in a no blame or no fault manner) drop a hint at something that the dreamer needs to look at without the dreamer getting the wrath of the conscious mind for colluding with the subconscious mind. There is a long explanation to this but you will have to trust me lest I will have whip out my psyche book and bore you to tears.
When i was out of this water, there was a sandy beach beneath me, but no source of the water i just got out of--and i was still floating up. I tried to enhale again, but this time i couldn't (even though i was out of the water). I started rising faster into the air, and i tried to scream out to the people below but couldn't.Now the dreamer is getting to the basic meaning of the dream/ brought to him/her courtesy of the subconscious mind. Now I will have to revert to your own take on what is happening here...The dreamer is in a space of his/her own so to speak and the colors of the sky are significant indicating passion that her world is consists of passion and vibrant emotions...this is your element and you are in it.
It was then i realized i was dreaming, and i've always wanted to fly in a dream, so i tried to do so. I moved about an inch or so and started plummetting, swirling downward out of my night sky and back to the beach i was above earlier.with regard to the colors, there is a bit of bad news....In some way you are out of control or lack functionality as of late in those categories (passion, and vibrant modes). I woke up before i hit the ground.
The[color="Red"] innuendo here seems to be that you normally have these aspects in your life. You are aware of what passion and vibrant modes do for you and how they make you feel, but as of late you are unable to control those two areas of your life(in some way). Your dream does not have to explain itself because you are already aware of details that have caused these things or associations to not be present.
We could speculate here but it would only be speculation and say...maybe you are very tired lately, perhaps there have been changes in your lifestyle or you physical well being that inhibit these aspects in your life. One thing is certain. You already know what this is about as indicated by your dream.
Your thoughts would be appreciated...

Thank you so much. I used to think all there was to dreams was "swimming means this" and "sky means that", but you've really opened up my insight. After reading what you have put, it seems that many of my dreams are semi-lucid. What does this mean? Will I be able to be in control of my dreams soon?

First of all I want to make it clear that I am not even close to being an authority on any facet of lucid dreaming. For years I was kind of stuck in the mode that you are now experiencing and it was described to me as being in a semi lucid state. As you will see, what I considered as being in a stuck mode was anything but being stuck. Lucidity occurs when the dreamer becomes aware of the fact that they are dreaming while they are dreaming. Different degrees of lucidity are possible, depending on the dreamer and if the subconscious mind will allow the dreamer to become lucid. In a slightly lucid state (as I call it) the dreamer is OK with just being aware of being in this state until he decides to try to control the dream, just as you did. If he is not able to control, often anxiety will proliferate the tone of the dream. For some it takes much effort and practice to be able to efficiently control the action of the dream and for some it happens easily.

This is what I see in your dream... You think, hey, I have always wanted to fly...and so you did fly but you could not control your flight action within the dream. The result was, that you kind of flew! Then it was likely that anxiety took over because you could not fly and the the waking physical body mode took over (you woke up).
This happened before you crashed and burned.

The result...Your dream translated out to the fact that you were lacking control in the passion and vibrant aspects of your life. This the way that I interpreted your dream and only you can know if that was on track or not BUT the other possibility is that your feelings and emotions were not completely realized or satisfied. What I mean to say is that you always wanted to fly. I take this to mean that you could be considered to be passionate about flying in dream and because you could not control the flying aspect of your dream, it resulting in a let down...also translating into being somewhat down about not being able to be passionate about flying in a dream. The symbolism in your dream reflected your disappointment. Are you with me? The same holds true about the vibrant aspect of you, that was also let down...another words the fact that you could not maintain control while flying kind of stripped your spirit away (for a short time).

If both, the "not being able to fly" in your dream, and in your waking life "lack of passion and having a vibrant outlook are true this is a multi plane dream, in which case, this dream that is a brilliant and efficient scripting by the subconscious mind designed to cover two areas of your life simultaneously.

On the other hand, if only one of the translations is true then the dream is only addressing that one, but is still considered an incredible work of the mind. Think of the processes and efforts that go into such a production, a production that is intended to send a message to the dreamer. For me it is always amazing!
It is possible that it is only addressing the fact that you do not yet have the capability to completely control the action in your dreams, in which case the emotions or let downs associated with this frustration, show (symbolically) as something that is lacking in your life. It is only you that can make such a determination, because it is only you that knows what is going on in your life.
I feel certain that your dream is at least addressing your frustration of not having complete control of the action in the dream (not being able to control you flight once you are airborne) but it can show a lack of control that might also exist in your waking life. Again, only you know...

I very seldom use examples of my personal dreams but I will make an exception here. Still I want you to understand that I am not turning this around to be about me. I think that by sharing what I have experienced, relating this semi lucid capability might be of interest to you or to others who may be reading this.

I happen to think that your semi lucid state offers some excellent opportunities for a kind of hybrid dream. I speak from experience here because the semi lucid state allowed me to introduce a "what if" column in my dream sequence. Here is how it works for me: A dream would initially present itself to me and then I could replay the dream putting in a "what if"... What if this was different or what if that was different? How would that affect the outcome? Example; I once saw a child in my dream. He was innocently standing on the sidewalk and a brick wall was to his back. I saw that the wall was ready to crumble and fall on him...I did nothing but view the dream. The wall did indeed fall. I was sad. After the dream, (while still in an unconscious state) I managed to replay the dream only being able to control the fact that I had the power to move the boy, or warn him. Then the dream played out using this information and I could see the result of my intervention. To me this is semi lucid, as I later discovered that my subconscious mind would only allow me to introduce so much content to into my dreams. (A totally lucid state, would allow me to completely control every aspect of the dream including the subject in general. I was never really interested in taking complete control because I was more interested in what the dreaming mind had to say. I felt that I would have been at a disadvantage because I would be able to negate the intended message. I would be consciously deciding every aspect of my dreams when is was the impartial subconscious that I wanted to hear from. Total lucidity would have me in riding the perfect tradewind aboard a yacht of my choosing, in the British Virgin Islands, with the perfect company and to being able to control 100% of the the action in the dream. While that has it's merits, this is something that I can do on my waking hours.

The semi lucid benefit...
I have been working in the dream world for quite some time and I have known engineers in my field who actually come up with designs and better ways of doing things as a result of being able to semi lucidly control their dream. One engineer told me. This is a most incredible laboratory, the mind. I can go to sleep with a dilemma and wake up knowing what will happen as I make sequential changes to my design. He said, it is like being able to do months of "what if" columns and trial and error tests in one night!!
So you see that the state of mind that you are experiencing is an incredible opportunity. Your mind is your lab. In the semi lucid state, the conscious mind is allowed to ask, "if I do this what will happen... Then using the input, then the subconscious mind shows an impartial and very knowledgeable extrapolation...
This is so powerful. One more comment! Perhaps the most dream filled night I have ever had was centered around this type of dreaming. I logged 139 dreams that night. I was very tired when I finally woke up. Several times that night, the mind was dropping me hints, late in the sequences, that I was well past my time to wake up...finally I had no choice. I woke up.

Default Flying and breathing in water

This is my interpretation of your dream. Like Sail, I agree it has something to do with control. Water, air and flying are all however very spirirtual in nature. This dream is about spiritual growth...whatever that may mean to you. You misjudged the water to be air and once you new it was water....you embraced swimming in it. Again however...you believed you needed to breath in it. You were using a natural means to deal with a spiritual issue. That is why you were surprised that you could breath and not be harmed. When you floated into the air it was because you surrendered to the process rather then tried to control it. People close to you were amazed (in awe) because you allowed the needed changes and they saw this as positive for your life. Purple is a color that is very spiritual. Day to night indicates a change to come. You rested in this change. In other words, the change is a positive aspect that you need. What the dream is warning you about is trying to control a spirirtual change that is to occur to you. It shows you that you can go much further by not allowing your own concepts or preconceived ideas about a spiritual matter to hinder your progress. It is stating that although you may feel overwhelmed by a change about to occur, do not struggle with it and do not be afraid but rather allow yourself to be guided into higher ground. If you try to control this change through your own prejudices or negative thoughts, you will again be brought back to the place you were before...a place you no longer want to be anymore. Hope this helps!
