Default Odin's Apprentice (6 years, but still curious)

I had this dream when I was 20, and I always thought it was interesting, and I've been wondering for the longest time what it meant.

In this dream, I was on a journey with four other people. The first was an elf girl who was average height, very thin, with brown hair and I think brown-green eyes, and dressed in a green tunic with brown boots, brown belt, and a hat (think like Link from Legend of Zelda). The second was what looked like an ancient Japanese girl. She was also around average height, slender, with long jet black hair, white skin, red lips, dark eyes, and a violet and white kimono and wooden shoes. The third was a viking who was easily over 6 feet tall, extremely muscular, dark tan skin, brown hair and long beard, brown eyes, and dressed in viking armor. He might have carried either an axe or a hammer. The last was a guy who looked around my age. He was average height, cut/athletic build, tan skin, I think either blue or hazel eyes, dirty blond to brown hair, and was good looking. I think he might have been a medieval/renaissance blacksmith apprentice.

There was a specific goal of the journey, but destiny seemed to play a heavy role in it according to the trials that we passed, and everyone seemed to know what their role was except for me. The worst of all was the viking, who was traveling with us but clearly had his own motive. So the bulk of the journey took place through this misty crystal cave.

The first trial... a ripe red apple sat in the middle of a cavern atop a pillar-like rock. I was hungry and I wanted to take the apple, but the Japanese girl took it instead. She was actually upset when she took the apple and ate a bite. She didn't want to; she treated it as if that was what she was meant to do. She didn't die when she ate the apple, but she was "out." She could no longer continue the journey.

The second trial... we continued on towards another cavern. We found one large arrow, but no bow. The elf girl started crying because she knew this trial was hers. I didn't understand what was supposed to happen, but (again) everyone else seemed to. The viking took the arrow and threw it straight at the elf girl. It stopped as it was just about to strike her through her forehead. Once again, she didn't die, but she was "out" and could no longer continue the journey.

We continued on, but I was starting to have major issues with the viking. While he may have been a traveling companion, he was clearly not an ally. The only reason he was even traveling with us was because he knew he needed us to get what he wanted.

So then as we continued, the mist cleared and we found ourselves in this war memorabilia store, stocked with antiques from the Vietnam War, World War II, and possibly from the Civil War. There were photos, medals of valor, old guns and rifles, etc. showing in the glass cases. The whole store was dusty, as if it had been closed down for years. The viking and the blacksmith apprentice stood next to each other off to the side as if they were making a path for me to the front of the store. Behind the glass counter stood who I identified as the Norse god Odin. He appeared as a centaur with 6-8 legs, the horse half being grayish. The upper human half appeared as a muscular man in his mid to late 40s, maybe early 50s. He had dark yet graying (pepper?) hair that was cut short, but also a beard, and he wore really short armor... like it covered a big portion of his chest, but that's it. There were leather belts to hold it in place, and you can see the rest of his muscles in his chest, back, and arms.

I can't remember if I was told or if I realized it, but this is when the purpose of the journey became clear. One of us was meant to be Odin's apprentice. It seemed that it was my destiny to become that apprentice... Odin may have even expected/wanted it to be me. The viking, however, was one who wanted to take destiny into his own hands. He wanted to be Odin's apprentice, and he didn't care who he had to kill to make it happen.

This was where my part of the journey came into play. Odin gave me a puzzle, which was like silly puddy or play-doh. With this puzzle, I was supposed to create a shape, and he gave me a chart of any shape it could look like. They were all fairly simple shapes. However, when I finished the puzzle, the viking and the blacksmith apprentice would start fighting. Whoever won, I would have to fight. The winner would become Odin's apprentice (and stating again, he clearly expected/wanted it to be me).

I kept purposely messing up the puzzle. I didn't want anyone to fight anyone, but more importantly, I knew that that viking would kill both me and the blacksmith apprentice in battle (and that he, in fact, had every intention of killing both of us in battle). Me, the blacksmith apprentice, the elf girl, and the Japanese girl all together couldn't make up that viking's weight in muscle. Mostly though, I just didn't want anyone to get hurt or to have to fight. So I kept messing up that puzzle, thinking that I could delay the inevitable. This entire time, it was completely silent.

At some point, Odin wrote a message for me in the dust of a framed picture in the glass display case/counter. I don't know what it said because my head couldn't seem to translate it. So I just continued to fumble the puzzle. The entire time, Odin was smiling at me. It was the kind of smile you'd see a father have while watching his six-year-old daughter. It was like a mixture of pride, sincerity, and happy amusement. He also wasn't fooled for a second and knew that I was purposely messing it up. Finally, he said in a kind, maybe even gentle tone, "You don't have to finish it now. You can take all the time you need."

Relieved beyond belief, I said "Really? Great!" and dropped the incomplete puzzle and left. And then I woke up.

I have always been really curious about this dream. It has stayed fairly fresh in my mind. Even the morning I woke up, I was able to remember it vividly. Is it just something interesting? Or is there some meaning behind it that I haven't been able to figure out still?

hey. this sounds awsome.
i love dreams like that! write a novel, its like a great adventure!
i dont know what to say, because i think its related to whats going on in your life and you, you soul.
When i have dreams like that, its like a lesson or a test.
i think its symbolism. you think that you need to be ready for something, but you are not expected to be, so take your time in preparing yourself.

Well, at the time, I was actually in a great place. I had just turned 20, I was in a major that I not only loved but was doing great in, I had found out I made the dean's list, I was happily in love, I was hanging out a lot with some of my best friends... my life was great and stable and on a good path (though several months later is when it all went downhill, but for when the dream occurred, life couldn't have been better). I wasn't troubled, I wasn't stressing, I had actually pulled myself out of a depression the year before. I was more on my own path than ever before.

I've been able to tell for years if a dream was trying to tell me something. This is one of the few that has never made sense to me. I had always thought it was just something interesting, though strangely vivid.

well myths and great stories may seem irtrelavant to modern day western lifestyle. Howveer, in reality life is but a stage and WE ARE THE ACTORS. What you do and the types pof people around you in deams show how you are cnnecting to the world.

Its rich in symbolism so its showing some greater part of your thinking. Some epic issue... big emotions. Try to think of deams as connections. Thats the way the dream mind works. so link togetehr symbols and real life

odin = confrontation = dominance

who is like odin?

odin = the way that my boyfriend acts = the way my next door neighbour treats his wife.

Try to see how each of these links is relevant in your life. It maybe that soimethoing was very relevant to the way odin acted. Remember you were trying to mess things up... but its like a tactic to stop Odin unleashing violence.. its likely that this dream links to the way you were relating to some problem. Trying to avoid trouble.. trying to defuse the situation.

Butb in truth only you could understand this dream. many dreams are vbrey specifc in their causes and only you can decode complex symbols. Thats because you have the background knowlkedge. yet now thats an old dream

Its amazing how very much connected to the moment dreams are. They are like diaries recording very up to date thoughts... your reaction to something.. or a reflection on how you acted and ways to improve your own behavior

------------------
In dreams your thoughts are portrayed in a very abstract way using images and feelings. A dream will normally refer to some new feeling or conclusion regarding your life. Dreams then are about ideas and higher intuitional thinking. But there are real problems associated with understanding dreams. A dream will refer to situations in your life which are very complex and really impossible for me or anyone else to imagine. A snake in dreams is a very general theme which can have a million and one real meanings. That symbol has a very real and precise meaning in terms of your recent thinking.
